‘Embrujo' recalls the avant-garde cinema of the 1940s in La Cápsula del Tiempo
The last session of this cycle of the Festival de Málaga concluded with a musical and theatrical performance by Manolo Supertramp and Roberto Aragón.

This Sunday, 16th March, La Cápsula del Tiempo presented its last session at the 28th Festival de Málaga, highlighting the figure of Lola Flores through the projection of 'Embrujo' (1947). Recognised as one of the most important feature films of 1940s Spanish cinema, this classic musical genre was revived in the second edition of this section of the festival, the focus of which this year was on the theme of "Fictional biographies" about well-known Spanish personalities in the post-war period.

Directed by Carlos Serrano de Osma and written by Pedro Lazaga, the film made a huge impact, bringing together two stars of the moment: the singer Manolo Caracol and the singer and Spanish dancer Lola Flores, whose surrealistic romance is at the heart of the plot. The film was not without its critics, as it had created great expectations among an audience that expected to witness an artistic display by a group of main characters playing a hitherto unknown role.

"The name of the film is down to the director", explained the curator of La Cápsula del Tiempo, Luis E. Parés, who in the presentation of the session set the scene in which the feature film was shot and presented for the audience in the 1940s: "Carlos Serrano de Osma belongs to a series of directors calling themselves renovators, who proposed a more ambitious cinema as a way of turning Spanish clichés upside down". He explained the classic "rise and fall" of the film with two of the most important performers and artists of that period, as well as revealing Lola Flores' disappointment at playing a character that did not exalt what she really represented in our country’s musical culture.

As a final touch to this session, the Manolo Supertramp Company and Roberto Aragón recovered the essence of 'Embrujo' through the staging 'Se rueda...¿o qué?' It was performance to conclude this edition of La Cápsula del Tiempo that left its mark on the entire audience.
