Val del Omar. El Laboratorio Plat
The multifaceted work of José Val del Omar (Granada, 1904–Madrid, 1982) is the result of his roles as inventor, visionary, visual poet, and filmmaker. Val del Omar coined this neologism to combine the activities of the alchemist with those of the filmmaker, thus defining his original approach to cinema through technological research and his own experimental aesthetic. Val del Omar began his cinematic career in the 1920s, when he unveiled his first three technical inventions: the "variable-angle temporal optics" (what we now know as zoom), the "panoramic concave screen," and 3D cinema, which he would later develop and which would give rise to Tactile Vision. Between 1932 and 1937, he participated, along with other members of the Generation of '27, in the Pedagogical Missions, the most radical cultural democratisation project undertaken by the Second Republic, for which he produced more than forty documentaries, most of which have since disappeared. After the Civil War, Val del Omar continued his research in the field of audiovisual technology, especially sound, before resuming his work as a filmmaker in the 1950s.

Imagine being able to sneak into the festival, accompany the artists and have them open the doors of their rooms for you. You can watch them jump on the bed, put on makeup and get ready. Now imagine walking at their side down the red carpet. You share a gesture, a look of complicity, the nerves of the rehearsal, the reunion with their loved ones and the euphoria of winning an award. You’re used to seeing them on the screen, but today you’re seeing them out of character: humans and genuine. Off screen. You were the first person to arrive and you’re the last to leave. I had the opportunity to experience this and during these days our Calle Larios gets dressed up for you with the images that I recorded in my retina.
