‘El ladrón de perros' competes in the Official Competition of the 28th Festival de Málaga
The film by Vinko Tomičić Salinas, developed with the support of Cannes and Venice, is successfully presented after its press conference at Cine Albéniz
On Monday 17 March, the Festival de Málaga welcomed 'El ladrón de perros’, the latest feature film by Vinko Tomičić Salinas, in its Official Competition Section. A co-production between Bolivia, Chile, Mexico, France and Italy, the film comes after its development at the Cannes Cinéfondation Residence and the College Cinema programme of the Venice Biennale.
The 90-minute film tells the story of Martín, an orphan who works as a shoeshine boy and decides to steal the dog of his best customer, a lonely tailor who he has begun to imagine as his father. The film is produced by Color Monster, Zafiro Cinema and Calamar Cine, with international distribution by Luxbox.
The cast includes Alfredo Castro, Franklin Aro, Teresa Ruíz, María Luque, Julio César Altamirano and Ninón Dávalos. Cinematography by Sergio Amstrong, music by Wissam Hojeij and editing by Urzula Barba Höpfner.
The press conference was attended by the film's producer Álvaro Manzano and leading actor Franklin Aro. Manzano confessed that the process of creating the film had been complex as it was "a co-production of six countries" that required a lot of time for its development.
He also spoke of the importance of the sound work present in each sequence. His aim was to "reflect the sound environments of La Paz, a somewhat chaotic city"; and it is this very chaos that conveys a "beauty of its own". At the press conference he also highlighted "the sound of protests and firecrackers", sounds that allow you to "feel the city". The location is intended to be "another protagonist that shows what happens to the character on the inside", the producer said.
The film's actor Franklin Aro admitted that he "never thought he would be the protagonist of the film" but that he was very "grateful" to be able to be part of this journey and to tell this story.
Following its screening at the Festival de Málaga, Vinko Tomičić Salinas' film will be released in cinemas on 17 October 2025.
