‘La furia’ competes in the Official Competition of the 28th Festival de Málaga
Gemma Blasco's debut film deals with sexual violence and the process of healing through art
On Wednesday 19 March, in Screen 1 of the Albéniz Cinema, the Festival de Málaga presented 'La furia', the first feature film by director Gemma Blasco, which has been selected to compete in the Official Competition.
The film, starring Ángela Cervantes and Álex Monner, offers an intimate and courageous look at sexual violence and the road to recovery through art. The plot follows Alex, a young actress who, after being raped at a New Year's Eve party, seeks support from her brother Adrian. However, his reaction, marked by anger and incomprehension, causes them to drift apart. Alex finds in theatre a way to channel his pain, playing the character of Medea, which allows him to explore and confront his deepest emotions.
The film was written by Gemma Blasco and Eva Pauné, with cinematography by Neus Ollé AEC BSC and music by Jona Hamann. Didac Palou and Tomás López - AMMAC were in charge of production. In addition to Cervantes and Monner, the cast includes Eli Iranzo, Carla Linares, Victoria Rivero, Salim Daprincee, Pau Escobar and the special collaboration of Ana Torrent.
The press conference was attended by the film's director Gemma Blasco, the leading actors Ángela Cervantes and Álex Monner, and the producer Mireia Graell.
Director Gemma Blasco said for her this film "is not a story of overcoming adversity, but aims to unravel the darkness that such a trauma generates". Her aim was "to offer a more raw, visceral and intimate look at the theme of sexual violence in which the characters reach emotional catharsis". She went on to say that the film "speaks of the human condition, of being between instinct and reason".
For her part, the leading actress Ángela Cervantes said that "being able to play a character like this is a gift". In relation to this, the actor Alex Monner confessed that during the filming, "they were very aware of the degrees of violence and darkness of the characters” and used this to construct and mould them. Finally, the film's producer Mireia Graell expressed her excitement at the film's reception at the Festival de Málaga.
‘La furia’ had its world premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas, and will be released in cinemas on 28 March 2025.
