Festival de Málaga presents ‘Polar', a noir thriller with its own identity
Alberto Palma makes his feature film debut with a story of disappearances, addictions and redemption starring Macarena Gómez
Festival de Málaga presented 'Polar', the first feature film by Alberto Palma, part of the Special Premieres section, on Thursday 20 March at the Albéniz cinema. The film is a thriller with a dark and enveloping atmosphere where suspense and personal drama intertwine in a story of disappearance and the search for redemption.
Macarena Gómez is an ex-cop from the Seville Homicide Group whose life has fallen apart after the loss of her son. Her descent into alcohol and drug problems led to her being expelled from the corps. One day, she receives an unexpected call: a man begs her to look for Macarena Gómez, a very popular TV actress who has disappeared under strange circumstances. Disoriented and with no official resources, she plunges into an investigation that blurs the line between fact and fiction, confronting her own past as she tries to solve a case that seems increasingly enigmatic.
Spanish director and screenwriter Alberto Palma developed his career in short films before making the leap to feature films with 'Polar'. His previous works, such as 'El chico en la puerta’ or 'Dada y Nieves', have stood out for their visual style and genre narrative, with a marked interest in thrillers and suspense films.
The film screening was attended by part of the cast, including Macarena Gómez, Lucía Díez, Marco Cáceres, Pol Hermoso and Salva Reina.
Actress and producer Macarena Gómez commented that this is "the first film she has ever produced" and is very excited to be able to present it at the Festival de Málaga. Gómez went on to say that she made this film because for her it was "a gift that pays homage to French polar cinema".
Actress Lucia Díez said that 'Polar’ "is a genuine film about young people telling their story". Actor Marco Cáceres reaffirmed that this film is very special, as "it is shot in 16 mm".
Actor Pol Hermoso shared his "excitement" and "happiness" at being at the Festival de Málaga with "a slightly different genre film". And finally, actor Salva Reina said that "Macarena is a titan, a brave actress who throws herself into the mud" and who works for the "film industry in our country" in an "admirable" way.
Following its premiere at the Festival de Málaga, 'Polar' will begin its tour of festivals and cinemas in 2025.
