Mama. In 1990, he received a scholarship from the Provincial Council of Bizkaia to study for a Master's Degree in Film Directing at New York University. In 2003, he directed his debut film,
Torremolinos 73, which was a blockbuster and won several awards. In 2012, with his second film,
Blancanieves, he won ten Goya awards, as well as the Special Jury Prize at the San Sebastian Festival and was nominated for Best Film at the European Film Awards and Best Foreign Film at the César Awards. In 2015, he was named
Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France). He premiered
Robots Dreams in Cannes in May 2023, his first 2D animated film, with which he has received many awards, nominated in several categories at the Goya Awards and at the Oscars for best animated feature film.
