Christian Checa and Hugo Welzel star in 'Enemigos', a story of overcoming and redemption directed by David Valero.
The latest film by the director from Alicante, presented at the Festival de Málaga, features a soundtrack by Steve Lean.

'Enemigos' is the story of Chimo (Christian Checa) and El Rubio (Hugo Wetzel), two neighbourhood teenagers, victim and executioner, bullied and bully, who have grown up as irreconcilable enemies. One day, Chimo has the opportunity to take revenge and decides to carry out his plan without imagining the consequences this will have on both their lives. This is the premise of the latest film by filmmaker David Valero, who maintains his editorial line of concern for the most disadvantaged social classes.

As part of the Official Selection Out of Competition screenings at the Festival de Málaga, the play was presented by its director and artistic team in the presence of the leading actors Christian Checa and Hugo Weizel in the roles of Chimo and El Rubio, respectively; the actress Sara Vidorreta and the producers Alberto Félez and María Contreras. The cast is completed by Estefanía de los Santos and Luna Pamies, among others.

In the colloquium following the screening, Valero explained how the idea for this film, which he began to shape together with the scriptwriter Alfonso Amador, came about. "Enemigos is about love, family, respect, kindness, revenge and hate." In the director's words, writing the script was a lot of fun because it was two people in their forties writing about teenagers, with dialogue that was reinforced by the freshest input from the protagonists.

With the intention of creating a moral dilemma, the director confronts the spectator with a difficult situation; that of putting on a plate the possibility of revenge against his worst enemy.

The actor Hugo Weizel has reflected on the use he has made of his emotions to integrate himself into the process of creating his character with honesty and respect for his colleagues. He also thanked Valero and Félez for this work because of the complexity of his character and said that his emotions, and how he manages them, are what helped him create this atmosphere of impotence and hatred towards his co-star.

Regarding the creation process, the director has stated that he was always guided by a rhythmic montage and the approximation to the musical format, without becoming one. The music, by Steve Lean with the participation of Bnet, international freestyle champion, has been an important part in "understanding situations in the film and uncovering the emotions of the characters."

For his part, Christian Checa added that music has also been an important element in delving into the universe of his character and explained how, thanks to love, he manages to break the chain of hatred. In this sense, Valero has pointed out that in the process of creation and staging, music has been taken into account, which has served as a tool to understand the depth and emotionality of the characters. Actress Sara Vidorreta added that feminine energy was also a changing element for the character of Chimo and his relationship with the women around him.

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Atítpica Films, the film will be released in Spanish cinemas on 9 May by Vértice Cine.
