‘El día de la tormenta’ opens the Focus section, which this year welcomes the Dominican Republic
Alexander Viola's film was screened at the Festival de Málaga followed by a colloquium with its director

This Tuesday 18 March, the Festival de Málaga hosted the screening of 'El día de la tormenta', the latest film by director Alexander Viola. It immerses the spectator in a tale of psychological terror in which fear, superstition and the weight of guilt intertwine in a rural setting.

After the feature film was screened as part of the Focus Republica Dominicana (Guest Country) section, the audience had the opportunity to attend a colloquium with director Alexander Viola, moderated by Mar García.

The story follows Macario, a man caught between reason and panic when he starts to believe that his own daughter is a witch responsible for the deaths of several children in his village. "The film stems from the concern of wanting to tell things that we can identify with, that belong to us. The storm comes from a real event that happened when I was a child," the director explained.

"My grandmother knew a lot about voodoo and mystical matters; since I was a child the things she told us were very much from the earth, from the depths of the countryside. And we wanted to do something to reflect that, what the reality of the countryside and rural life in the Dominican Republic is like,” he added.

He also recounted some of the major complications experienced with the production: "We filmed in a very uncomfortable place, we wanted to feel the authenticity that they are in the bush, that they feel lost. We lived for three months with the local people to get their perspective.
The film explores the capacity of fear to transform communities. ‘El día de la tormenta’ shows how currents of thought and beliefs can condition the perception of reality.
With this new edition of Focus, the Festival de Málaga continues to highlight Latin American cinema for yet another year.
