Marilyn Monroe, Harry Dean Stanton, Rafael Azcona, Roger Corman, Paco Rabal and Mel Brooks feature in the ‘Golden Age’ at Albéniz Cinema from 4 to 11 September
The classic film festival includes an introductory workshop on film language for the over 55s in collaboration with the "la Caixa" Foundation and open to Soy Procultura club members

Albéniz Cinema will once again host The Golden Age, the classic film festival organised by Malaga City Council through Malaga Procultura, in collaboration with the "la Caixa" Foundation, Classic Films and Europa Cinemas, which will screen seven thematic cycles of 18 feature films in 35 mm, DCP and original version with Spanish subtitles from 4 to 11 September. It will also include an introductory workshop on film language for the over 55s, a book presentation and a meeting with figures to be announced in the near future.

This cycle aims to highlight classic cinema in original format, continuing the work carried out throughout the rest of the year with great public support by the Albéniz Cinema Film Library, which will host all the screenings. This year, The Golden Age is marking the centenaries of Marilyn Monroe, Harry Dean Stanton, Rafael Azcona, Roger Corman, Paco Rabal and Mel Brooks and Buster Keaton’s The General; as well as the 50th anniversary of Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, a seminal film in modern cinema.

The series dedicated to the centenary of American actress Marilyn Monroe will include screenings of The Asphalt Jungle (John Huston, 1950), Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder, 1959), All About Eve (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1950) and The Misfits (John Huston, 1961).

Harry Dean Stanton’s cycle will remember three of the actor's films: Paris, Texas (Wim Wenders, 1984), Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Sam Peckinpah, 1973) and Wise Blood (John Huston, 1979).

The work of screenwriter Rafael Azcona will be explored with Belle Époque (Fernando Trueba, 1992), El pisito (Marco Ferreri, Isidoro M. Ferry, 1958), El verdugo (Luis García Berlanga, 1963) and La lengua de las mariposas (José Luis Cuerda, 1999). A book featuring previously unpublished material by Azcona, compiled by Pepitas de oro and published in collaboration with Festival de Málaga, will also be presented.

American producer, actor and director Roger Corman will be featured with the films House of Usher (1960), The Pit and the Pendulum (1961) and The Raven (1963).

The unforgettable Paco Rabal will be remembered with Viridiana, a film directed by Luis Buñuel in 1961; whilst Mel Brooks will be featured in Young Frankenstein (1974). There will also be a tribute to the centenary of The General (Buster Keaton, Clyde Bruckman, 1926) and the 50th anniversary of Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976).

Side activities will include a new Introduction to Film Language Workshop for the over 55s, which will take place on 10 and 11 September, in the mornings, in collaboration with the "la Caixa" Foundation. The session will analyse Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot (1959), part of the series dedicated to Marilyn Monroe. Registration is open to Soy Procultura club members until 3 September by sending an email to promocion@malagaprocultura.com indicating their full name, age, member number, contact telephone number and preferred day for the event. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tickets for The Golden Age are on sale from today at 6 pm at the box offices of the Albéniz Cinema and Cervantes Theatre, and on the Unientradas website at a unit price of 6 euros (5 euros for Soy Procultura members).
