SYNOPSIS 57 is the number of female weavers who work on the coasts of the Basque Country, a traditional occupation that they continue as if time had stopped. With their hands covered in salt, they silently weave without stopping. They are part of the sea and its mystery. The radio alert of a ship breaks the night, a lighthouse illuminates everything with its light, a sailor drifts through the thoughts of the water and several hands dance and dance until they merge with the nets.
Joana Moya
Bilbao, 1985. She studied Geology and Contemporary Dance in the Basque Country of Spain. Since 2010 she has been working in the audiovisual industry, drawing on her earlier disciplines for inspiration. In 2022 she directed the short film
Todo cubre la sal (
Salt Covers All), in which she utilises poetic language to provide a portrait of the women who weave the fishing nets on the Basque coast. Inspired by her work in geology, her first feature film
The Koreana, a Story of Ferromagnetism, Light and Memory, is a project in development selected by the Matadero Residence Center with Cineteca, Noka Mentoring (Tabakalera) and Dirdira Lab.
