The Malaga Film Festival announces at Ventana Sur the selected films for MAFF 2024, a co-production event of the MAFIZ Industry area
The next edition will take place from the 4th to the 8th of March as part of the 27th edition of the Malaga event

The Malaga Festival has announced at Ventana Sur the selected films for MAFF (Malaga Festival Fund & Co Production Event), an event that forms part of the MAFIZ (Malaga Festival Industry Zone). It will be held from the 4th to the 8th of March 2024 as part of the 27th Malaga Festival. The announcement was made by the MAFIZ coordinator, Annabelle Aramburu, along with the ICAA's Deputy Director General for Promotion and International Relations, Camilo Vázquez Bello.

MAFF is organised by the Malaga City Council and the Malaga Festival in collaboration with the ICAA (Spanish Institute of Cinematography and Visual Arts), CAACI (Conference of Ibero-American Audiovisual and Cinematographic Authorities), IBERMEDIA, FIPCA (Ibero-American Federation of Film and Audiovisual Producers) and EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs).

MAFF is conceived as a space for communication that facilitates dialogue between Ibero-American and European feature film producers, in a co-production and market meeting. It is a scenario that encourages the artistic growth of projects, international co-production, networking and increases their chances of financing. MAFF brings together, in an unprecedented way, the main international co-production financing funds that exist on an international level in a single place: Malaga.

The projects selected by the committee are:

  • La lengua del agua (Venezuela / Dominican Republic), Jeissy Trompez.
  • Allq'u (Peru), Teo Belton.
  • Los pasajeros del último viaje (Cuba / Colombia), Marta María Borrás.
  • Habitación 205 (Chile / Argentina), Pablo Díaz.
  • Un amputado (Chile), Ignacio Pávez.
  • La costa (Spain), Nerea Barros.
  • El Milagro de Surubi (Uruguay), Lorenzo Tocco.
  • La Vida Simple (Panama), Abner Benaim.
  • Resistencia (Dominican Republic), Yannilys Pérez.
  • El niño y el tiburón (Peru / Spain), Lucía Florez.

The projects selected through agreements with other festivals are:

  • Bolivia Lab - La carne dócil (Spain), Pedro Gumão.
  • Brasil Cinemundi - Infantaria (Brazil), Lais Santos Araújo.
  • DAFO Peru - Switzerland (Peru), María Fernanda Gonzales Vargas.
  • SANFIC - Las locas de la Praviana (El Salvador / Spain), Brenda Vanegas.

In addition to these, there are two projects from the Maff Women Screen industry section, another two from Latin American Focus and two from Territorios, to be announced soon.

MAFF, which celebrates its seventh edition in 2024, goals are:

  • To select, guide and provide creative, economic and financial advice to generate viable, quality audiovisual projects that facilitate their insertion in the global market and thus contribute to the internationalisation of the projects.

  • To provide personalised training and coaching to producers and directors, in accordance with the needs of the teams that make up the selected projects, aiming to acquire tools that will be used in the face-to-face business meetings in the city of Malaga.

  • To promote innovation in business and production models for new feature films with international co-production potential, for subsequent distribution and commercialisation in different markets and through different modalities.

  • To be the communication and networking platform of reference, where industry professionals can meet and get to know the projects that are being developed at an early stage.

  • To generate spaces for reflection, debate, and discussion on the issues that are developed in the global audiovisual ecosystem and that affect the projects that form part of the MAFF catalogue.

  • Insert new players in the Ibero-American audiovisual industry and create new content in dialogue with audiences: new and diverse audiences that are part of our ever-growing audiovisual activity.

The projects selected for MAFF 2024 are eligible for the following awards:

  • Bolivia Lab Industria Award, to participate in the production laboratory to be held in July 2024 in the city of Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
  • Cántico Producciones Awards: Two awards will be given to two projects participating in MAFF. First Award: 10 minutes of original music for a fiction or documentary project, preferably from Central America or the Caribbean, participating in MAFF, valued at €6,400. Second Award: Original music and audio post-production for a trailer or teaser up to 2 minutes long for a fiction or documentary project participating in the MAFF section.

  • Impulso ECAM Award to receive personalised advice with the aim of strengthening the project and providing it with knowledge and tools for its development.

  • Acorde / Music Library: three awards will be given to three MAFF projects (Award for a project from Latin America, Award for a project from Ibero-America, and Award for a project from the Women Screen Industry section). They consist of a cash prize of €300, as well as a flat rate for a production valued at €295.

  • SANFIC: Santiago International Film Festival: SANFIC Industry Award to participate in the production laboratory to be held in August 2024 in Santiago de Chile.

  • SIDERAL: will select a winning project from among all the MAFF projects, which will be offered a prize of €5,000 as a Guaranteed Minimum on the international distribution of the winning project.
