Ariel Rotter presents Un pájaro azul, a family story that explores the crisis of a couple in search of descendants
The latest film by the Argentinian director was premiered in the official Out of Competition section
Ariel Rotter has presented his new film starring Alfonso Tort and Julieta Zylberberg. The plot follows the life of Javier and Valeria, a couple mired by years of frustrated desire to have a child. The narrative takes an unexpected turn when Camila, Javier’s co-worker, reveals that she’s pregnant with him, triggering a conflict that puts Javier’s values and responsibility to the test, leading him to question his existence and relationship with his partner.
After the press screening, director Ariel Rotter and the lead actors took part in a Q&A where they delved into the key aspects of the film. Rotter shared that the genesis of Un pájaro azul goes back twelve years, during his own personal experience in the search for fatherhood. After facing emotional exhaustion on his own journey, the Argentinean director decided to return to the project, whose plot is woven around a love affair and explores emotional maturity.
The film addresses two fundamental thematic cores: the couple’s struggle to become parents and the illness of the director’s father. The challenge for Rotter was to merge these narrative strands, creating a work that explores the ability to process the pain of the past in the present.
The actors highlighted the immaturity of the male character, Javier, played by Alfonso Tort, who immersed himself in the experiences and sensations of men without giving enough space to Valeria’s emotions. Tort described his character as 'a misfit who must learn his role and face up to the consequences with his partner'.
The director praised the ability of the protagonists to immerse themselves in their roles once filming began, underlining the depth they brought to their characters. Un pájaro azul invites reflection on the complexities of relationships and the search for meaning in the midst of personal crises.
