SYNOPSIS After being wounded in the Cristero War (1926), where he fought as a mercenary for the Federal Army, Juan deserts the battlefield. Several years later, he suffers the death of his only son, Jesús. This tragedy forces Juan to carry the coffin back to Porvenir, the town where his wife is buried. On his journey, he must cross a devastated, godforsaken country and get lost on roads besieged by the Devil.
