David Trueba presents 'El hombre bueno', which invites reflection on relationships and grief in the process of separation
David Trueba has presented his new film, 'El hombre bueno', which invites us to reflect on relationships and grief in the process of separation, and with which he is competing in the Official Section.
Trueba, who is also the screenwriter of the film, stated that 'our generation has been made to conceive couple relationships as relationships of conquest and abandonment, that is, we only know how to live the great moments of a relationship'. On the one hand, seduction and conquest, and on the other, the break-up. However, 'we do not know how to live the flat stages, referring to the day-to-day, to the routine'.
During the press conference, Trueba reflected on love, which he considers can become a boomerang, with which you first build and then destroy the person. It is a mistake to think that when you start a relationship with someone, you have to stop being yourself and submit to the other person,' he said.
The story of the film is inspired by a real event that the director experienced. Someone told him that he had to play the role of a 'good man' in a separation process. And he became interested because 'he thought that it is impossible not to project your own sentimental and emotional biography in such a process'.
It stars Jorge Sanz, Macarena Sanz and Vito Sanz. 'I try to ensure that the characters in the films do not have a single reading, but allow the spectators to project their own experience onto them', said Trueba.
Vito Sanz confessed that there is a parallel between his own separation and the story of the film. On the other hand, Macarena Sanz emphasised that the characters have many layers that she gradually discovered as the script progressed.
The script tells the story of a couple who travel to an old colleague's house in Mallorca to act as a 'good man', that is, a mediator to help them in their separation process. This isolation will lead them to confront their own concepts about the couple, the break-up and mourning.
Finally, Jorge Sanz said that this is a film made 'with a wire, two sticks, skill and desire'. And he expressed his gratitude that the director has always found his vital moment to offer him oxygen in his professional life.
