A gastronomic journey from Navarre to Taiwan is the protagonist of the final leg of Cinema Cocina
The Buddha jumps over the Wall film was screened at the Teatro Echegaray and attended by its director and chef David Yárnoz
The chef David Yárnoz runs both a restaurant in Navarra as well as a replica of the same restaurant in Taiwan. And this is the plot of Buddha jumps over the Wall, a feature-length documentary directed by Pedro Peira, which was screened this Thursday as part of ‘Cinema Cocina’ at the 27th edition of the Malaga Festival.
'The real origin of the restaurant dates back 30 years ago to when my parents started the business', explained Yárnoz, the protagonist of the film and owner of El Molino de Urdániz (Navarra). The documentary tells the story of a trip to his Asian restaurant after three years without visiting due to the pandemic. When he arrives in Taiwan, he not only observes how it works, but discovers contrasts and similarities with the local cuisine and forges a great friendship with the chef Kai Ho too.
In addition to portraying the restaurants, the way they work, and the importance of the producer, the director Pedro Peira pointed out that, as well as 'showing the cuisine', he also wanted to highlight the 'enterprising character of the Spaniards who are capable of going to Taiwan, like David. Something that’s very difficult to do'. The documentary also reflects the contrast in locations and the transition from one restaurant to another, from Pamplona to Taipei itself. 'I wanted to show haute cuisine on the one hand and also the more street cuisine or tapas bar level', added Yárnoz.
During the round table, attendees were able to taste a glass of Palacio rosé wine from the Sada winery, cured goat’s cheese from Quesos Montes de Málaga and Barbate mojama.
The ‘Cinema Cocina’ cycle continues this Friday with the screening of Big Red by Charly Birdman, an adventure starring Ángel León to discover the secrets of red almadraba tuna, and the Out of Competition documentary Tasting victory, the life and wines of the world’s favourite sommelier, by director Kiki Glover (nee Hopkins). The film is the story of Gerard Basset, a world-renowned, much-loved and respected sommelier who was also the most decorated of all time.
