"Cartas a Miguel de Molina", an intimate portrait of the artist who defied his time.
Paco Millán presents at the Festival de Málaga an epistolary documentary about the life of the iconic Malaga singer and actor.
The Festival de Málaga screened 'Cartas a Miguel de Molina', the new documentary directed by Paco Millán, which is part of the Special Screenings Documentary Section, this Friday 14 at the Andalusian Tourism and Sports Hall.
The film pays tribute to the legendary Spanish artist Miguel de Molina. Through an epistolary approach, the film reconstructs his life, his career and the struggle against repression that marked his career.
'Cartas a Miguel de Molina' reconstructs the life and legacy of the legendary copla singer Miguel de Molina, who was born in Malaga in 1908 and became one of the most renowned artists of his time. However, his career was marked by political persecution and homophobia, which led to his exile in Argentina.
The documentary employs an epistolary approach, using letters that Miguel de Molina received throughout his life, along with testimonies from artists and experts, and the recreation of his own voice to tell his story. Through this method, the film offers a unique perspective on his struggle for freedom, his love of music and his legacy in Spanish culture.
Andalusian director and producer, Paco Millán has lived in New York since 2016 and has an extensive career in music and biographical documentaries. In 1995, he founded the production company Omnibus Pictures and subsequently set up his own production company in the USA, Me on Air. He has directed numerous documentaries focusing on flamenco music and iconic figures of Spanish culture.
The screening was attended by the executive producer, Juan Cabral and the actor who plays Antonio De Molina, Rupert León.
Juan Cabral reminded us of the importance of this type of projects that recover our past, since "the dead are the ones who really bring us back to our historical and cultural past, from which our current artists draw their inspiration." Nowadays artists have this "mirage with the singers of the past", as is the case with Miguel.
With this documentary, Cabral said, they intend to "shed light on the legacy he left behind." A heritage "unique in its genre", "perfectionist" and with a "great sensitivity". On the other hand, the actor who plays Miguel De Molina, Rupert León, said that it had been an honour for him to play such a character: "It is an example of diversity despite all the drawbacks, an example of resilience, of resurgence."
After its presentation at the Festival de Málaga, 'Cartas a Miguel de Molina' will begin its tour of festivals and international distribution platforms.
