The Colombian film 'Un muerto en el pueblo' opens the Zonazine section of the 28th Festival de Málaga
The feature film, directed by Mauricio Cuervo, mixes horror, comedy and drama in a peculiar zombie story.
The most daring and avant-garde proposals at the Festival de Málaga are presented each year at Zonazine, which this year presents eight films: four Spanish, one co-production and three international.
The Colombian film 'Un muerto en el pueblo', a production written and directed by Mauricio Cuervo Rincón, opened this section. It was screened on Friday 14 March at the Albéniz cinema's Sala 3, and the presentation and subsequent press conference was attended by the director himself, the leading actor Pablo Pachón and the producer Sandra Bustos.
The film tells the story of a man who returns from an untimely and violent death in a village in the Colombian Andes. His presence stirs up the neighbours, and soon the celebration turns to fear.
According to Mauricio Cuervo, the film's director, at a press conference: "It's a film that is a bit out of the ordinary and mixes different genres: horror, comedy and drama. The idea came from asking ourselves what we would do if one day a deceased person returned, how we would deal with the arrival."
Sandra Bustos, the film's producer, assures that "it is a film made with love and passion. I think it will be warmly received by the public."
Its protagonist, Pablo Pachón, wanted to highlight how lucky he was to be chosen to star in this story: "I'm from the small village in the Colombian Andes where the film is set, and both the director and the producers decided to cast the actors in the same village. When I left the house, I only had to walk four blocks and I was on the set. It was a dream."
As for the film's route beyond the Festival de Málaga, the idea, according to its producer, is to show it in as many venues as possible. For the moment, the film's theatrical release seems complicated, but they hope that it will be released on a platform and on Colombian television.
Mauricio Cuervo Rincón is a screenwriter, director and producer, and his films have been screened at film festivals such as Rio de Janeiro, Warsaw, Guadalajara and Palm Springs, among others. He co-directed the short film Coffe Break and produced Todo es culpa de la sal, both of which won awards at various film festivals. He also wrote the screenplays for the Colombian feature films Silencio en el paraíso and Antes del fuego, both of which were also recognised at various film festivals. Crónica del fin del mundo, his directorial debut, was awarded, among others, Best Film at the Bogotá Film Festival and was released in several countries. He is currently working on several projects, including the animated feature film Mi papá el camión.
