‘Uno equis dos’ is presented at the Festival de Málaga as a portrait of ambition and consequences
Alberto Utrera's film immerses us in a story inspired by real events where the promise of wealth uncovers its main characters’ deepest fears.
On the second day of the Festival de Málaga, filmmaker Alberto Utrera presented 'Uno equis dos' in the Official Section Out of Competition. It is a black comedy based on a true story that tells how two friends in their 40s rethink their lives when they are about to win the jackpot in the betting game they have been playing since university. The film, starring Paco León and Raúl Tejón, also features Kimberley Tell, Stéphanie Magnin and Adam Jeziersky in its main cast.
It immerses the spectator in a story where the promise of wealth acts as a catalyst for tensions, revealing the characters’ deepest fears and desires. Between satire and social critique, 'Uno equis dos' raises the dilemma of whether we would really be willing to change our lives when faced with the possibility of winning a fortune.
The audience took part in the colloquium following the official screening with the film’s director, accompanied by the artistic team made up of Paco León, Adam Jezierski, Kimberly Tell, Stephanie Magnin and Raúl Tejón.
The director highlighted the outstanding acting work of the cast because of the high level of tension they had to maintain throughout the days of filming days to achieve the appropriate tone for their characters. He also revealed to the audience that the inspiration for the main plot came a decade ago, when he heard the true story of a couple who, after a long debate about what they would do with a hypothetical fortune if they won the jackpot on the football pools, ended up divorcing, only to find out later that they had indeed won.
The artistic team present praised the dynamics proposed by the director to achieve the required dramatic tone and bring out the worst in each of the characters, as well as the connection between them, from the first moment and during the four weeks of filming.
The film, which has drawn inspiration from films such as ‘Los odiosos ocho’ and ‘Perfectos desconocidos’, has been scored by Fede Pájaro, who in the words of the director "has been key to generating the appropriate atmosphere through accents and sounds".
Alberto Utrera's third feature film is produced by Garajonay Producciones together with Buendía Estudios and invites us to reflect on the decisions made throughout life, with a mixture of humour, violence and tenderness throughout the story.
