The feature film in the Zonazine section features Anna Alarcón, Álvaro Cervantes, Marina Salas, Iván Massagué and Oriol Pla
The third film in the Zonazine section of the Festival de Málaga, Iván Morales' debut feature ‘Esmorza amb mi’ (Breakfast With Me), a very personal story that has taken 20 years to materialise, was presented today at the Cine Albéniz cinema.
The film tells the story of four characters who struggle to regain faith in themselves and in love. Natalia, a separated mother with financial problems, suffers an accident and is reunited with Salva, who wants to leave the past behind in search of redemption. He longs for a new beginning with Carlota, who faces up to her past and her obsession with Omar, a composer in crisis.
After the screening of the film in Hall 3 at the Cine Albéniz, a press conference was held with its director, Iván Morales; the actress Marina Salas, and the actors Álvaro Cervantes, Iván Massagué and Oriol Pla.
The director explained the origin of the film to the audience and journalists: “I've wanted to do it for 20 years; I tried to get the project off the ground without much success after writing some short films, so I started doing theatre, and suddenly I found myself with a career in theatre that I didn't expect. Years later, around 2016, I revisited the script and turned it into a play. It was watched by a producer who wanted to turn it into a film, and it has materialised into what you have just seen.”
During the press conference, Álvaro Cervantes related how he met Iván Morales at the age of 17 while filming a short film. Since then, they had both dreamed of making a film together. In turn, Marina Salas emphasised the ease with which the director worked right from the beginning: “he gave us a lot of space and listened to all the actors”.
Oriol Pla and Iván Morales were also linked by the world of short films, as the actor explained: “We met 15 years ago, when I was shooting short films backstage for a TV3 soap opera. He signed me up to do theatre, and since, then he has been a mentor, a friend, a colleague and a great inspiration.”
The actor Iván Massagué has highlighted the large amount of background information he received to prepare for playing his character, and Marina Salas has revealed that she was even given a detailed biography of her character from childhood.
Regarding his next projects, the director revealed that he is currently in the process of writing a second film, but did not want to provide details of the story.
Iván Morales has excelled as an actor for over 30 years, working with renowned directors like Isabel Coixet and Agustí Villaronga. He debuted as a screenwriter with ‘Mi dulce’ (My Sweet) and ‘El truco del manco’ (The One-Handed Trick), as well as being the showrunner for the animated series ‘Heavies tiernos’. In cinema, his career in directing short films began with ‘Ha llegado la hora de contarte mi secreto’ (The Time Has Come To Tell You My Secret), premiered at the Gijón International Film Festival, and ‘Dibujo de David’ (Drawing by David), which received the award for best script at the Madrid Short Film Festival. His most recent short film, ‘Sushi’, has been selected for over 40 prestigious festivals. As a theatre director, he has premiered plays in renowned theatres, directing both his own texts, such as ‘Esmorza amb mi’ (Breakfast With Me), ‘Jo mai’ (I Never) or ‘Sé de un lugar’ (I Know of a Place); and adaptations of works by other authors, such as the recent hit ‘El día del Watusi’ (The Day of the Watusi).
