The romantic comedy ‘Mensaje en una botella’ (Message in a Bottle) closes the third day of screenings in the Official Out-of-Competition Section
Argentinian Gabriel Nesci returns to the Festival de Málaga for the world premiere of his latest film, starring Luisana Lopilato

What if you could send a message back in time to correct a mistake? This is the premise of ‘Mensaje en una botella’, in which a sommelier discovers a method of communicating with her past self and uses it to avoid a bad decision. However, each attempt to rewrite her history leads her to an even more complex present, trapping her in a cycle where each adjustment takes her further away from the life she longs for.

Argentinian director Gabriel Nesci has returned to the Festival de Málaga following the 2013 premiere of 'Días de vinilo' and has expressed his enthusiasm at being able to present his new work to Spanish audiences. "This story explores regret, remorse and the eternal question of what would have happened if we had taken a different path in life".

During the presentation and subsequent discussion of the film, the director, accompanied by the film's producers and cast, emphasised the symbolic importance of wine in the film as a metaphor for time: "Wine evolves inside a bottle, just as we evolve over the years. I wondered what would happen if, like a castaway, we could send messages to ourselves in time".

Luisana Lopilato, who stars in the film, expressed her enthusiasm for the challenge of playing a time-travelling character for the first time. The actress said she was privileged to be able to continue making films in her country and thrilled by the affection she has received from the public in Spain.

For his part, Benjamín Vicuña confessed that when he received the script he felt vertigo at the complexity of his character: "I always think the characters have more layers than they appear to have at first. Fortunately, Gabriel guided us to build them into the universe of the film, where wine is not only a narrative element, but a symbol of human connections".

In this regard, Nesci spoke more about the choice of wine as a key element to enable time travel in history. Beyond his personal passion for this product, the director acknowledges that he was attracted by its symbolism: "That idea was the starting point for developing the story and reflecting on how each year is marked by a different experience.

Actor Benjamín Vicuña emphasised that both his character and that of Benjamín Amadeo play a fundamental role in the plot, providing key elements that could have altered the course of the story. The two actors showed their gratitude to the director by acknowledging the challenge of making films in Argentina. For his part, Benjamín Amadeo agreed with his colleague in expressing his joy at presenting the film for the first time to the Spanish public.

On the production side, Rocío Gort and Ignacio Rey emphasised that this is their third collaboration with Nesci, with whom they share the same cultural universe. They underlined the complexity of the filming, as different eras were recreated in a single day, which posed a great logistical challenge. They also pointed out that presenting the film to the public represents the closing of a significant process, marking the final encounter between the work and its audience.

‘Mensaje en una botella’ is a story of second chances, of bonds that transcend time and the eternal dilemma of what we would change about our past if we had the chance.
