'Un año y un día' has been premièred in Cineforum format for schools as part of the Official Selection Out of Competition at the Festival de Málaga
Álex San Martín's debut feature film tells a story of self-improvement, second chances and self-knowledge
The first feature film by director and screenwriter Álex San Martín 'Un año y un día', starring Nicole Wallace, Luis Fernández and Nadia de Santiago, was presented in the Official Selection Out of Competition on the fourth day of screenings at the 28th Festival de Málaga. As part of a special programme, the screening was part of a Cineforum aimed at Secondary and Baccalaureate students, an initiative promoted by the Festival together with the Education and Youth Departments and the Culture Department of the Malaga Provincial Council.
Hugo (Luis Fernández) is a man determined to win back Sara (Nadia de Santiago), the love of his life, by learning to play the piano for a year. Nerea (Nicole Wallace), his neighbour, will be the one to help him in this challenge, giving the piano lessons that could change their lives forever. This is the main plot of 'Un año y un día', a story about second chances, the fight for dreams and the importance of self-knowledge.
During his presentation in Malaga, the director was accompanied by the actresses Nadia de Santiago and Nicole Wallace, as well as the actor Víctor Elías. San Martín described the film "as an emotional journey that explores self-love, perseverance and personal growth." In the words of the director, San Martín has emphasised his intention to tell a story that transcends romantic love, exploring a deeper message: "how, without realising it, we can help others and how fear can be transformed into motivation."
The cast is completed by Luis Fernández, along with renowned actors such as Carlos Iglesias, Fanny Gautier, Antonio Gil, Paula Iglesias and Cosette Silguero.
The film relies on a narrative structure with the use of flashbacks and flashforwards "to enhance its pace and keep the viewer's interest." San Martín also added that the music, by Víctor Elías and Jaime Vaquero, was key to inspiring both the actors and the crew during the filming.
Actress Nicole Wallac has stressed that preparing for her role as the pianist was an emotional but also a technical challenge as she came from a project with a more commercial feel: "I was coming from playing a very different character, so trusting Álex and finding the light and optimism of my character was a challenge." For her part, Nadia de Santiago emphasised how her character opens up through love. Moreover, she described it as unpredictable and profoundly evolving throughout history.
Nadia de Santiago said that the filming was a very pleasant experience and a great teamwork. As this was the director's first film, the excitement was palpable on every day, with a dedicated team on the same page.
Wallac also highlighted the positive atmosphere on set, "something that is not always common in many productions." For her part, Nadia de Santiago underlined the director's generosity during the filming, which fostered a climate of constant collaboration.
The presentation of 'Un año y un día' was framed in a Cineforum activity, a cinematographic and educational experience that offers Secondary and Baccalaureate students the possibility of experiencing cinema in a reflexive way. The initiative consists of a first phase in which the teachers of the schools involved receive teaching materials to prepare the pupils before the screening. The students then go to different venues of the Festival de Málaga to attend screenings and participate in discussions with the artistic and creative team of the films. With this special screening, young people had a unique opportunity to reflect on dreams, love and self-improvement through film.
