This Monday, 17th March, at the Rectorate of the UMA, 5 Minutos began, the 28th Festival de Málaga's window that brings projects in different stages of production to meet the public. This edition of the competition has also increased its quota and has 15 films that will be screened until next Friday.
The first day of this section was made up of three meetings with very different themes. Javier Peña's new project 'Hope! Estamos a tiempo' offers a response to the climate emergency while the director Sala Sálamo presented 'En silencio', an intimate documentary about the footballer Isco. Finally, the figure of Paco Rabal was recalled, to whom a tribute is to be paid in the form of a feature-length documentary on the centenary of his birth in 2026.
'Hope! Estamos a tiempo', an optimistic view of climate change
This Monday's opening session of 5 Minutos featured 'Hope! Estamos a tiempo!', a documentary made up of six chapters. Each episode focuses on an issue of the climate emergency and offers a positive response as a counterpoint to the prevailing pessimistic view. A project that has been hosted by RTVE Play and is expected to be released in the second quarter of this year.
The presentation was attended by: Javier Peña Sánchez, creator of the project; producer Mariano Baratech; and, on behalf of RTVE Play, Alberto Fernández Torres, its director, and Daniel Seseña Blanco, executive producer.
"The good thing about the cards we have to regenerate the planet is that they are very desirable and, fortunately, there are solutions that improve our lives in every way," said Javier Peña in a positive tone about why he decided to carry out this project.
Sara Sálamo presents the hidden side of footballer Isco in 'En silencio'.
The second project presented on the first day of 5 Minutos revolves around the figure of the footballer Isco Alarcón. 'En Silencio' is the name with which the director Sara Sálamo wanted to capture the difficult process of recovery from an injury that kept the player, who is also her husband, away from the pitch last year.
Malaga hosted Sálamo's first film in which she participated as an actress 14 years ago and last year her first short film was shown as part of the Festival de Málaga. The director admitted at the presentation of her new project that she is "very proud" that 5 Minutos has given her the opportunity to present this seed of a feature-length documentary.
A tribute to Paco Rabal on the centenary of his birth
The project that closed the day of 5 Minutos on Monday 17 March was 'Cartas a Paco Rabal', the provisional name of a project that seeks to recover the figure of one of Spain's most international artists and filmmakers on the centenary of his death.
Vanessa Benítez Zamora, director of this project, was accompanied by José Egea Gutiérrez-Cortines, screenwriter and producer; José Antonio Hergueta García, producer; and Carlos Belmonte Ríos, producer.
"This comes from the affection and love I had for Paco," said Carlos Belmonte. José Antonio Hergueta emphasised that "the aim is to link a biographical theme with a film that transcends". The director Vanessa Benítez, for her part, explained how she wanted to include an attractive component in this project through unpublished images; a process in which they have approached her person and her family to "pay tribute to her and narrate how she has transcended to the present day".
