The 2025 Culture Observatory report, produced by the Fundación Contemporánea, has reaffirmed the status of the Festival de Málaga (organised by Malaga City Council through Málaga Procultura) as a "cultural insignia" of Andalusia, once again placing the festival in first position regionally in its ranking of "the best of culture," while nationally it has climbed from 10th to 9th place.
This ranking was announced today at an event held in Santander, attended by numerous members of the panel that participated in its creation, representatives of cultural organisations from across Spain, industry professionals, media representatives, and members of the cultural community. The event was attended by the director of the Festival de Málaga, Juan Antonio Vigar, who accepted the cultural insignia of Andalusia on behalf of the festival.
Since 2009, Fundación Contemporánea has conducted an annual survey to produce a series of indicators related to different areas of culture, the cultural activity of autonomous communities and cities, and the most outstanding cultural institutions and events of the year. This Observatory involved 443 members of a panel of leading cultural professionals, resulting in a report that includes more than 500 cultural initiatives from across Spain, identified by the panelists as the best in their respective categories.
In the ranking of the most relevant cultural institutions and events in Andalusia, the Festival retains its top position and remains a "cultural insignia" of the region. The top positions on this list are occupied by Málaga-based cultural institutions such as the Picasso Museum Málaga (second), the Centre Pompidou Málaga (fourth), La Térmica (ninth), and Genalguacil Pueblo Museo and Teatro del Soho Caixabank (which share tenth place). As for the city of Málaga, it ranks fifth nationally in terms of cultural relevance.
In the national ranking of cultural institutions, the Festival de Málaga has climbed to 9th place, one position higher than last year. Thus, the Festival has risen in recent years from 38th (2017), to 31st (2018), to 24th (2019), to 11th (2020), 10th (2021), 9th (2022), 14th (2023), 10th (2024), and 9th (2025).
