Tirso Calero presents 'Tarántula' in the 5 Minutos section of the 29th Festival de Málaga
The screenwriter returns to feature film directing with this project that makes viewers reflect on how life can take a dramatic turn.
The Rectorate of the University of Malaga (UMA) hosted the presentation of screenwriter Tirso Calero's new project in development, Tarantula, on Sunday, 8 March, in the 5 Minutos section of the 29th Festival de Málaga. This 80-minute thriller, based on a play by the director, prompts reflection on how life can change overnight.
In the film, Sara Reverte, a former model who became blind in an accident, suffers the worst nightmare of her life when, upon returning to her luxurious home, a robber breaks in and murders her husband.
One of the biggest challenges, according to its lead actress, Hiba Abouk, was portraying a blind character originally conceived for the stage. In this film, as the director emphasised, the female protagonist “learns to live like tarantulas do”. This character, according to the actress, “required many hours of practice at home, acquiring a sensory understanding that stays with you”.
Furthermore, the discussion touched on consumption patterns and how these have transformed the industry. Producer Carlos Guerrero reflected on cinema as a promotional tool where consumption and narratives are changing. “Who would have thought that we would be consuming films vertically on mobile phones and in 60-minute episodes?”. Tirso Calero concluded by discussing the profitability of certain themes in film, such as the thriller genre, which “has always had a loyal and international audience due to its ease of translation”.
Tirso Calero is a screenwriter with extensive experience in television fiction in projects such as Amar es para siempre, Bandolera, Cuéntame cómo pasó or Servir y proteger, who returns to directing feature films after Blockbuster.
