Los justos (The righteous) exposes human corruption at the Festival de Málaga
The debut film by directors Jorge A. Lara and Fer Pérez enjoyed a notable presence of its popular actors in the Official Out of Competition section
The 29th Festival de Málaga has hosted the presentation of the film Los Justos, the film directed by Jorge A. Lara and Fer Pérez, who have shown their debut film as co-directors to the public for the first time at the Festival de Málaga
After the screening, the film's crew appeared before the media at a press conference attended by a many of the cast, including Carmen Machi, Pilar Castro, Bruna Cusí, Vito Sanz, Marina Guerola, Hugo Welzel and Aimar Vega. The team present at this appearance was completed by Luis Collar, producer, and José Pastor, director of Cinema and Fiction at RTVE.
Each of the performers has developed their character and explained a plot based on the deliberation of a popular jury composed of nine citizens, who must decide the verdict in a controversial corruption case. Although the evidence seems conclusive and public opinion has already passed judgement, the situation takes an unexpected turn when the jurors secretly receive a tempting offer: one million euros each if they change their vote from guilty to not guilty. For the plan to succeed, they must reach a unanimous decision, a condition that will uncover the contradictions, interests and personal conflicts of those who, until then, were supposed to impart justice.
“12 hombres sin piedad (12 men without mercy) is a clear reference and a counterpoint to this film", confessed Fer Pérez about the film's clear intention of staging prejudices and playing with the spectator's value judgements.
At the same time, Jorge A. Lara explained how, in the process of choosing the characters, they started with a cliché for each one, so that the spectator could recognise some of the nine protagonists as real and credible people.
The filmmakers explained that "going back to the connective and to this obsession with the subject of money" was the guiding thread for showcasing this leitmotiv of Spanish cinema, which raises a very topical subject on the national scene, which is the corruption of human beings at all levels.
The actors, for their part, uncovered anecdotes and curiosities from a four-week shoot in which they had all kinds of inconveniences, which served to highlight the enormous capacity and "human quality" of the two directors, who knew how to guide each of the characters from the inside.
