Ángeles González Sinde tackles directing actors in a masterclass at the Festival de Málaga
The filmmaker has shared the ins and outs of filming Después de Kim (After Kim), her latest feature film in the Official Competition.
This Monday, March 9th, the Festival de Málaga hosted a masterclass by the scriptwriter and director Ángeles González Sinde entitled 'Directing actors: balance, drama without drama', a meeting framed within the MAFIZ programme and held in the Rossini Hall of the Cervantes Theatre.
In front of a group of students, and accompanied by the director Juan Zavala, González Sinde began by pointing out that "when you work with great actors you also have the advantage of their experience, and the important thing is to control the tone", in reference to her latest work with Adriana Ozores and Darío Grandinetti, the stars of Después de Kim, her latest feature film, which is taking part in the Official Competition at this year's edition.
"It is always easier to work with more experienced actors, as in any sector. At the end of the day, a director makes a few films in their life but actors and technicians make many, and you can learn a lot", the director pointed out. "In the previous film I worked with teenagers and it was harder for me. You need more rehearsal or more shooting time because they know less technique”.
For her, the director is the one who has to guide emotions, bearing in mind that a film is shot out of order. In addition, it is essential to "harmonise with the rest of the characters, so that it doesn't seem that each one is making a film".
González Sinde took the opportunity to highlight the work of the supporting actors: "Even though the lights and the red carpet are for the main characters. If it weren't for the supporting cast, everything would falter".
Regarding the work on a film, the filmmaker stressed the importance of rehearsal, pointing to it as something fundamental: "It is in rehearsals that you discover things. If you start recording without rehearsing you're asking for trouble, because when you see things you can't change them". However, she admitted that Después de Kim is the film she has rehearsed the least because Darío Grandinetti was on a theatre tour: "We rehearsed for just a week before recording".
She also recommended that attendees have a clear map of what they want to represent: "The director must have answers, and not only for the actors; the art team also needs to know things".
This series of MAFIZ meetings will continue this Tuesday with a Masterclass by José Luis Rebordinos, director of the San Sebastian Festival.
