‘Todos los colores’ offers a realistic view of people with disabilities at the Festival de Málaga
Director Beatriz de Silva's debut feature film was presented in the Official Out of Competition section
The 29th Festival de Málaga hosted the presentation of Todos los colores, the debut feature film directed by Beatriz de Silva, which aims to offer a realistic view of people with disabilities.
Screening in the Official Out of Competition section, the film was followed by a discussion with the director, actresses Mafalda Carbonell, Eva Moral, and Silvia Abril, who participated via video call, as well as María Cervera, executive producer of this empowering project.
The screenplay centres on Belén, a 17-year-old wheelchair user who finds herself questioning her place in the world as she finishes high school and experiences changes in her friendship group. When an unexpected circumstance draws her into adaptive sports, her life begins to transform through new connections, the awakening of desire, and the need to define her own identity. In this journey toward maturity, Belén will discover that growing up means accepting change and learning to see life in all its nuances.
“When you’ve never been around someone with a disability, you don’t truly understand what it means,” reflected Beatriz de Silva, who confessed that directing her first feature film after several short films was “a triple somersault” due to the level of responsibility she has taken on.
The director, in turn, indicated her intention to move away from the paternalistic and overprotective approach that many people with disabilities have to contend with, who, in many cases, “don’t need pity, but simply a ramp to make things accessible.”
To convey this message, the young filmmaker emphasised the importance of choosing a strong cast that can communicate effectively so that viewers can understand and normalise many situations and episodes naturally.
The lead actress, Mafalda Carbonell, shared some behind-the-scenes moments from filming and highlighted the great chemistry among the cast. This sentiment was echoed by the popular and established actress Silvia Abril, who also took the opportunity to praise the positive and harmonious atmosphere on set.
Eva Moral, a renowned Paralympic triathlete, also expressed her gratitude for having had a “wonderful experience” acting for the first time in a film that “depicts situations that break stereotypes.”
