The 29th Festival de Málaga pays tribute to Jaime Chávarri with the Honorary Biznaga and the screening of El desencanto (The Disillusionment)
The event, held in the Picasso Museum Auditorium, also included the presentation of the book El desencanto 50 years
The 29th Festival de Málaga, organised by Malaga City Council through Malaga Procultura, held a tribute to Jaime Chávarri today at the Picasso Museum Auditorium in collaboration with the Spanish Film Archive and Audiovisual Media Copyright (DAMA). During the day, El desencanto, this year's Película de Oro Tribute, was screened and the filmmaker was presented with the Festival's Honorary Biznaga.
The session revolved around El desencanto, a key work of Spanish cinema which, fifty years after its withdrawal from the San Sebastian Festival, retains its capacity to question the spectator on issues such as paternal-filial and fraternal relationships, mental health, political militancy, and the limits of the documentary genre.
The film became the seed of the 'cinema of the real' in the post-Franco period and in the early days of the Transition, which earned it censorship and criticism from conservative media. "I wouldn't have made films today. At that time I had just finished Law. I was shooting films with friends and it was the producer Querejeta who offered me this project", said Jaime Chávarri.
The actress Ana Rujas has described the film as "inspiring" for any creator and person: "It impacts you because of family pain or because of one's social class". In this regard, the director of the Filmoteca Española, Valeria Camporesi, stated that this work was "unusual, surprising, spontaneous", as it forms part of a specific cultural period, the end of Franco's dictatorship, which gives it "great importance in the history of world cinema". This is why José Luis Rebordinos, director of the San Sebastian Festival, considered that "it is only fair" that this year El desencanto can be seen at the 29th Festival de Málaga.
During the event, El desencanto 50 years was presented. This book, by Felipe Cabrerizo, Santiago Aguilar and Carlos F. Heredero, sheds light on the creation, itinerary and repercussions of the film. Jaime Chávarri was also interviewed on everything that surrounded the creation of the film. Carlos F. Heredero commented during the colloquium that the fact of highlighting this film "has been an exciting adventure".
In this regard, Felipe Cabrerizo pointed out that it is a "dazzling film on a cinematographic level. What surprised me most is Jaime's ability, considering the historical moment in which he creates the film".
The director of the Festival de Málaga, Juan Antonio Vigar , highlighted Enrique Cerezo's efforts to "recover this Spanish film heritage", as well as the effort of the authors Felipe Cabrerizo, Santiago Aguilar and Carlos F. Heredero. Also present at the colloquium were actress Lucía Zamora, writer and filmmaker Marta Medina, and Enrique Cerezo, producer and president of EGEDA.
