‘Un hijo' thrills an enthusiastic audience at the Festival de Málaga
Nacho La Casa presented this social drama in the Official Out of Competition section and participated in a discussion after the screening with its young star, Ian Ortegoso
The 29th Festival de Málaga has hosted the presentation of Un hijo, the feature film directed by Nacho La Casa, which was screened before a visibly moved audience as part of the festival's Official Out of Competition section.
Following the screening, the director participated in a discussion with the audience, accompanied by the young star, Ian Ortegoso. The encounter allowed for a deeper exploration of the key themes of this story, marked by emotion and a focus on childhood.
Un hijo presents a psychological drama centered on the emotional world of childhood. The story follows a school psychologist (Macarena García) who begins to realise that behind the apparent normality of a boy newly arrived at school lies a complex inner world full of silences. As she tries to understand what is happening in his family environment, she becomes immersed in a delicate emotional investigation that will test her own limits and her understanding of protection and truth.
During the Q&A with the audience, the filmmaker shared the origin of the project and explained that he decided to adapt Alejandro Palomas's book of the same name for the big screen after realising, while reading the novel, that it resonated with the adult world. "Sometimes, it's hard to tell if it's the child protecting the parents or if it's the parents who, at times, clumsily protect their children," Nacho La Casa said, reflecting on the situation the film portrays.
“During filming, I tried to plan everything beforehand to focus exclusively on timing, pauses, eye contact, and working with the actors,” the director explained, referring to the importance of the characters portrayed by a renowned cast including Macarena García, Hugo Silva, Jesús Carroza and Adelfa Calvo.
Much of the credit for the emotion of the audience, which erupted in a long applause after the screening and subsequent discussion, goes to Ian Ortegoso, a young actor of just nine years old who made his acting debut with this project. “It's true that something special came up that made me choose him,” the filmmaker explained regarding the long and complex casting process to find the young actor, highlighting his remarkable ability to retain lines and the unwavering support of his family throughout the process.
