Andy portrays the migratory journey between hope and the harshness of the border at the 29th Festival de Málaga
Based on real cases, this production directed by Román Parrado was presented in the Official Out of Competition section
The 29th Festival de Málaga hosted the presentation of Andy, the new feature film directed by Román Parrado, which after its screening was followed by a meeting with the audience, with the participation of the filmmaker himself, the screenwriter Alfred Pérez-Fargas, and the producer Ibón Cormenzana.
During the colloquium, the team delved into the origin of the project, its documentation process and the realistic approach to a story about migratory flows, highlighting the harsh reality of countless people who risk their lives in search of a supposedly better life.
The film follows the journey of a young migrant girl who crosses Mexico in the hope of reaching the USA, a journey marked by uncertainty, the dangers of the road and the clash between the idea of the promised paradise and the harshness of reality. Along the journey, Andy delves into the experience of those who undertake extreme migratory routes, focusing on the vulnerability and resilience of those moving towards an uncertain future.
During the colloquium, director Román Parrado explained that the idea for the film came from his experience in Kabul, where he was filming a report on the Taliban for Salvados, where people were also fleeing violence and poverty. Given this context, the director felt the need to transfer that reality into the realm of Spanish-language films.
The filmmaker also emphasised that the staging was the creative driving force behind the project and that the film was conceived as a physical journey that would replicate the migratory crossing, filming from the southern to the northern border of Mexico. He also pointed out that the reality of migration routes is always more complex than any cinematic reconstruction and that the team was particularly surprised to discover the high number of unaccompanied minors crossing the border, something that influenced the narrative's perspective as children tend to approach the journey with a sense of adventure, detached from the adult perception of danger. In this regard, the director pointed out that the film also seeks to show how the promise of a paradise on the other side of the border does not always match what is actually found there.
For his part, the screenwriter Alfred Pérez-Fargas was visibly moved by the exhaustive documentation work that preceded the writing of the script. The team, he said, researched numerous true stories and documented lives marked by attempts to cross the border, which led them to opt for a seemingly harsh ending. In their view, concluding the story in this way was the most honest option given the reality they had encountered during the research process.
Producer Ibón Cormenzana also highlighted the solidarity dimension of the project, pointing out that this is the fourth film he has made for charity. In the case of Andy, the income generated by the film will go to support shelters that serve migrants trapped in border areas, in that "no man's land" where many are waiting for a chance to continue their journey.
