Arantxa Echevarría proposes a dizzying comedy with Cada día nace un listo (Every day a clever man is born) at the Festival de Málaga
The actors Hugo Silva, Susi Sánchez, Dafne Fernández and Jaime Olías took part with the director in the press conference after the screening
The director Arantxa Echevarría has presented her new feature film, Cada día nace un listo, at the Festival de Málaga, where after the screening the crew appeared before the media at a press conference in which the actors Hugo Silva, Susi Sánchez, Dafne Fernández and Jaime Olías also took part, as well as the general director of Atresmedia Cine, Jaime Ortiz de Artiñano, and Jorge Castellanos, the film's producer.
Screened in the Official Out of Competition category, Cada día nace un listo is a fast-paced comedy that explores human contradictions through a story full of deceit, ambition and extreme situations. Set in an urban environment where appearances play a decisive role, the film follows a group of characters who try to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them, even if they have to cross blurred moral lines to do so. With an ironic tone and a dynamic narrative style, the film combines humour, tension and a social commentary to reflect on cunning, roguish behaviour and the need to survive in a competitive world.
"It's a bit of madness, a comical prank", Arantxa Echevarría defined this new production at the press conference, in which she talked about something that happens to all of us: the desire to get ahead and make a quick buck in this society of consumerism and madness, in which human mischief is always present.
She also highlighted the camaraderie that was generated during the filming. The filmmaker said that she was "amazed" with the cast, stressing that they all worked "incredibly well", defining the process as a very beautiful journey in which she felt very supported by the whole team. She also explained the importance of San Sebastian, where the film was shot, a place that has a very particular visual personality based on a marked social stratification and very powerful photography.
The director also underlined that this project marked a change with respect to her previous works in terms of staging and production. She argued there was a specific intention behind each decision, an abundance of short shots, a constant interplay between music and silences and a frenetic pace that echoes the style of the ‘contracomedia’. In this regard, she defended her commitment to exploring new narrative territories, this time venturing into comedy.
The performers, for their part, agreed on the ease with which they worked under Echevarría's direction. Hugo Silva pointed out that he was lucky enough to have time prepare his character, and it was a role he has particularly enjoyed. The actor also described the demands of his performance, although he also highlighted the freedom he had to develop it, even in scenes that allowed him to sing and dance within the drama.
For her part, Susi Sánchez confessed that the proposal to go into comedy was a real gift for her. The actress has admitted that at first she did not know if she would be able to cope with it, but she admitted that the experience liberated her as a performer. She also reflected on the difficulties of the genre, pointing out that the most complex aspect of comedy is to ensure that it has content and that it is not just empty entertainment.
From the production point of view, Jaime Ortiz de Artiñano revealed that the project was a long time in the making. The head of Atresmedia Cine explained that the script had been in circulation for around twelve years and that it was even on the verge of being shot in 2014. He ended by saying that he decided to recover the text from the drawer, reread it and reactivate its development, the result being the film that has now been presented in Malaga.
