Cochinas, the groundbreaking comedy series from Prime Video, premieres at the Festival de Málaga
The new Spanish comedy series was screened in the Series Out of Competition section

On Friday 13 March, the Festival de Málaga hosted the premiere of the series Cochinas, the new Spanish comedy from Prime Video. Three of the eight episodes were shown in screen 1 of the Albéniz Cinema.

The discussion following the screening included the creators, Carlos del Hoyo and Irene Bohoyo; the directors, Andrea Jaurrieta, Laura Campos, and Nuria Gago; the producers, Eneko Gutiérrez and Aritz Cirbián; the head of Spanish series at Prime Video, María Contreras; and the actors Malena Alterio, Celia Morán, and Álvaro Mel.

Carlos del Hoyo, one of the series' creators, emphasised its unique character and how they tried to avoid anything "vulgar or crude." He also stated that the world of video rental stores seemed "fascinating" to them, as it's a space that no longer exists.

Irene Bohoyo, for her part, stressed the importance of research before filming began to ensure the series remained true to reality, explaining that they spoke with "several people who had run video rental stores."

One of the directors, Andrea Jaurrieta, highlighted how "fun" it was to film the series and affirmed that they had a "very clear" tone from the start. Nuria Gago added that "the team was very brave" and gave "more than we asked for," something the directors particularly appreciated.

Laura Campos then stated that this series is “a critique of the entire porn industry through all the characters” and encouraged viewers to “keep watching to delve deeper” into the subject.

The star of the show, Malena Alterio, confessed that “the emotional exposure was more difficult than the nudity” and acknowledged that one of the biggest challenges of the project was portraying the character's evolution.

Likewise, Álvaro Mel highlighted how “supported” he felt by the directors and the entire technical team, something that made him “enjoy” the series immensely. Celia Morán echoed this sentiment, explaining that although “each director has a very different personality,” none of them contradicted each other during filming, which made them seem like a kind of “super mind.”

It's 1998, and in Valladolid lives Nines (Alterio), a conservative housewife who must take over the family video store when her husband falls into a coma. Discovering that the business is bankrupt, she decides to specialise in the only profitable genre: porn.

With the help of Chon (Morán), the outspoken employee, and Agu (Mel), a die-hard cinephile, Nines transforms the Dorothy into the city's first porn video store and turns it into the epicentre of a social earthquake among the neighbourhood women. Sexual liberation becomes unstoppable.

After its run at the Festival de Málaga, the series will be available in its entirety next April on Prime Video.
