Un altre home at the Festival de Málaga presents a story of doubts, love and life-changing events
The director David Moragas was accompanied by part of his team in a colloquium following the screening to discuss this Catalan production
The 29th Festival de Málaga hosted the presentation of Un altre home (Another Man), the new feature film by David Moragas in the Official Out of Competition section. This Catalan film grew out of a short film that served as the inspiration for the story, moving between drama and comedy, with a pace marked by a comic tone.
After the screening, the film's crew appeared before the media in a press conference. The meeting was attended by the director, actors Lluís Marquès and Quim Ávila, actress Bruna Cusí, and producers Alba Bosch and Antonio Chavarrías. The participants reflected on the project’s origins, the creative process and the challenges of producing the film, which will be released in cinemas on 27 March.
Un altre home is a contemporary love story that explores the contradictions and tensions of relationships among couple’s in their thirties. Marc and Eudald are an apparently steady couple with a stable life, but the arrival of a new neighbour in the building opposite begins to upset the balance. As Marc grapples with his own doubts and unhappiness, and Eudald tries to cling on to the stability of their relationship, the film reflects on love, life expectations and the sense of loss at a key stage in life.
Through its narrative, the film explores themes such as personal expectations, a mother's grief, couple dynamics and processes of gentrification, issues that the story balances with a sensitive and human portrayal its characters.
During the press conference, David Moragas emphasised the observational dimension of the writing process: "The job of scriptwriter involves a lot of research and seeking to see others from another perspective". The director also welcomed the collective nature of the project: "I shared the creative process with both scriptwriters and performers, and I have highlighted this intersection of viewpoints in this project". He also reflected on the act of writing: "I have a premise when I write, which is: write as if you were afraid. Writing is a great privilege, in that you can set aside some time for it every day, although the problem is often having to make ends meet in the meantime with another job".
The actor Lluís Marquès underlined the trust generated within the creative team: "I had worked with both David and Quim before, and that gave us a great deal of confidence and put us at ease when it came to working together”. Along the same lines, Quim Àvila highlighted the particularity of the creative process: "We had a dramatist, scriptwriter and director all in one, which ensured a consistent understanding from all points of view, always underpinned by his emotion and sensitivity".
Meanwhile, the actress Bruna Cusí pointed out the interpretative challenge her character posed: "For me it was a challenge because the character is on the edge between crying and laughing. It was very important to understand who that mother was”.
From the production side, Antonio Chavarrías acknowledged the difficulties in getting the project off the ground: "Everything was easy creatively, but from a production point of view it was complex, as certain peculiarities made it difficult to secure financing". He also emphasised the working atmosphere: "Apart from the financial side of things, it’s been a very smooth project, thanks in part to David’s creativity and the quality of his excellent script".
Last, producer Alba Bosch praised the team's commitment: "We were fortunate to shoot with a team that was very committed to the project. The director's clear idea, from the script to the cast, made it very easy to produce".
