Director Marcelo Piñeyro, Retrospectiva Award at the 27th Malaga Festival
The event recognises with this award the Argentinean filmmaker, author of hits such as 'Tango feroz', 'Plata quemada', 'Kamchatka' and 'El método'
The 27th edition of the Malaga Film Festival (from the 1st to the 10th of March) will award the Retrospectiva Award, in collaboration with the Malaga Hoy newspaper, to Marcelo Piñeyro. The event thus rewards the career of one of the most successful directors in Spanish-speaking cinema, whose works are massively acclaimed by both critics and audiences.
Graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the National University of La Plata, Marcelo Piñeyro (Buenos Aires, 1953) made his film directing debut with Tango feroz (1993), followed by Caballos salvajes (1995), Cenizas del paraíso (1997), Plata quemada (2000), Kamchatka (2002), El método (2005), Las viudas de los jueves (2009) and Ismael (2013), and most recently the miniseries El Reino (2021) and its second season (2023).
He has won dozens of prizes and awards worldwide at various festivals such as San Sebastián, Sundance and Rome. He has participated with several of his films at the Venice, Berlin, and Toronto festivals. Likewise, he was awarded the Emerging Masters Award by the Seattle International Film Festival. He has also won three Goya awards from the Spanish Film Academy and the Sur Award from the Argentinean Academy. He was an executive producer of La historia oficial (1985), an Oscar-winning film from the Hollywood Academy.
