Vueling and Repsol join forces on a flight-tastic with the Malaga Film Festival
Pioneers in the manufacture and use of renewable fuels, the two companies have collaborated to supply an amount of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) equivalent to 50% of flight consumption.
The flight was operated by an A320neo aircraft, which allows reducing the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20% compared to previous models.
Vueling and Repsol today operated a special flight between Barcelona and Malaga, to coincide with the start of the Malaga Festival, which also participated in this action. Thus, the leading multi-energy company in Spain in the manufacture of renewable fuels and the leading airline from IAG group have collaborated to supply an amount of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) equivalent to 50% of the flight's consumption. In addition, the flight was operated by an A320neo aircraft, which allows reducing the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20% compared to previous models.
The initiative reflects the commitment of both companies to the decarbonisation of the aviation sector and their commitment to SAF, a fuel that produces up to 80% less CO2 emissions over its life cycle compared to traditional aviation fuel.
Flight-tastic to the Malaga Film Festival
Vueling has turned the plane into a flight-tastic: on the outside you can read ‘Hoy vuelas en Première’ (in English: Today you fly in Première), inside the headrests are special, and the carpet emulates a film reel.
In addition, passengers were able to enjoy the screening of ‘Estimada Ángela’ with members of the cast. The short film, which participates in the Animation Short Film Section at the 27th Malaga Festival, is directed by Paco Sáez and features the voices of Emma Suárez and Nicolás Coronado, among others.
Vueling and Repsol, aligned in favour of the decarbonisation of the airline industry
In this regard, the IAG group, to which Vueling belongs, was the first airline group to commit to achieving zero net CO2 emissions by 2050. As part of its commitment to decarbonise the airline industry, Vueling plans to use 10% of SAF by 2030, double the EU requirement. Currently, the airline has already supplied more than 1,500 tonnes of this sustainable fuel since June 2022, when it became the only airline to offer its customers to provide SAF on the day of their flight thanks to the voluntary contribution they can make, which the company matches.
According to Franc Sanmartí, Director of Sustainability at Vueling, ‘today's flight, promoted by a partner as important as Repsol, shows the importance of collaboration between all the actors in the value chain to promote the use of SAF. At Vueling we are firmly committed to this alternative fuel, but to achieve real changes in the aviation industry we need the support of all the agents involved. Fortunately, in Spain, we have the resources and potential to be a European benchmark in the production of SAF’.
For its part, Repsol has invested 250 million euros to complete the start-up of the first plant dedicated exclusively to the production of advanced biofuels on the Iberian Peninsula and one of the first in Europe. The plant, which is located in Cartagena (Murcia), has an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes of SAF and renewable diesel, enabling a reduction of 900,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Repsol's objective is to reach a production capacity of up to 2.7 million tonnes of renewable fuels by 2030.
For Curro Lucas Ochoa, Manager Mr of Sustainable aviation at Repsol, ‘this joint action between Repsol, Vueling and the Malaga Festival shows the commitment of the three organisations to sustainable leisure. Repsol is the multi-energy partner of the 27th edition of the Malaga Festival and, thanks to its commitment to renewable fuels, it has been able to provide Vueling with 50% SAF for the flight that covered the Barcelona - Malaga route. It has meant a reduction of 5.59 tonnes of C02. In addition, this commercial flight was the first in Spain to use the maximum consumption of SAF permitted by current international regulations, which only allow a 50% mix of SAF and traditional fuel’.
For its part, the Malaga Festival has among its foundations its commitment to environmental sustainability and is in this sense a benchmark among national and international film events. This strategy has already materialised in the last two editions and continues in 2024 with the aim of continuing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to propose actions for continuous improvement in terms of environmental sustainability.
In its 27th edition, the Malaga Festival has sealed a strategic alliance with Repsol, with the aim of implementing other measures and solutions to reinforce its commitment to sustainability. Thus, Repsol's adhesion as a multi-energy partner allows for a qualitative leap in the reduction of emissions at this year's Festival. Repsol will supply alternatives to ensure that the Festival's transport is sustainable. In this sense, renewable fuels and electric mobility have been chosen to meet each of the Festival's demands.
