Laura Alvea, from Seville, returns to the Malaga Festival as a director after an extensive career in different areas of filmmaking.
MALAGA. 05/03/24. The fourth day of screenings in the Official Section out of competition at the Malaga Festival has witnessed the intriguing thriller directed by the filmmaker Laura Alvea, who returns to the festival after an extensive and outstanding career in different areas of filmmaking.
Under the title 'La mujer dormida', Alvea presents a captivating love triangle headed by the roles of Javier Rey and Almudena Amor. The plot delves into the complex relationship of Ana, a nursing assistant, who finds herself attracted to Agustín, the husband of a woman in a vegetative state for whom she cares. The narrative takes a surprising turn when Ana experiences paranormal events, apparently planned to force her out of the house and separate her from Agustín.
Amanda Goldsmith completes the cast, while the script, by Miguel Ibáñez Monroy, Daniel González and Marta Armengo, creates a thriller where suspense and the supernatural are masterfully combined. The director, known for previous successes such as 'La chica de la nieve', keeps a constant tension that will not leave genre lovers indifferent.
The film crew, led by the director and part of the cast, took part in the discussion after the screening for the press and the audience. The film director explained her interest in the project and the influence she had in classic film when it came to approaching it. 'I always thought that the best thing to do was to approach the classics, with references to the master Hitchcock as inspiration through titles such as Rebecca or Vertigo'.
Facing a film genre little explored by women was never an obstacle for the filmmaker, who recognises that she has been inspired by references such as Amenábar and Alberto Rodríguez, proving that the gender gap should not limit the aspirations of any filmmaker.
On the other hand, the actress Almudena Amor shared her experience of the physical challenge involved in bringing her character to life in the film. Aware of the importance of physical contact to communicate the connection and symbiosis between the two female protagonists, Amor emphasised the dedication to the work and the importance of maintaining that connection on screen.
In addition, the actress has revealed the extra effort involved in dealing with the physical changes of her character in each sequence, as the story was not shot in chronological order.
The producers, Marta Ramírez and Olmo Figueredo, have expressed their satisfaction with the film's successful trajectory at international and national festivals, anticipating promising international sales. ‘La mujer dormida', produced by La Claqueta PC and Coming Soon Films with the support of RTVE and TV3, will be commercially released on the 31st of May by Filmax.
