Caparrós. Las botas del entrenador deals with the figure of the Sevillian football manager through his time as Armenia’s national coach
Cinema and football, two of the greatest spectacles in the world, come together in the documentary Caparrós. Las botas del entrenador, which was screened this Wednesday at the Festival de Málaga
Directed by Ángel Tirado, the film portrays the career of Joaquín Caparrós, a fundamental figure in Spanish sport, using his time with the Armenian National Football Team in 2021 as a starting point, with the pandemic and a war in between. The screening of the feature film took place at the Andalusian Tourism and Sports Room and was attended by countless fans and followers of the former footballer and charismatic coach from Seville.
'For me, making this documentary about Caparrós was a privilege on a personal and professional level. Even more so for the fact that he dared to leave Spain to push the boundaries of football', explained Ángel Tirado at the presentation of the film about Caparrós, whose career as a coach began at the age of 26. Passionate about football from birth, he played in the youth teams of Sevilla and Real Madrid, as well as with Leganés, Pegaso, Tarancón, San José Obrero and Unión Balompédica Conquense.
'After twenty years in football, the opportunity arose for me. I confess that I had to look on the map to see where Armenia was. When I got there, I really fell in love. Four languages were spoken in the national team, but there was a non-verbal language. With a hug, a look, we all understood each other. In the end, I realised that it’s a country of young, happy people with an enormous sense of patriotism', Caparrós told the audience at the screening.
5,000 km away from his native Utrera, veteran coach Joaquín Caparrós ended up becoming a hero for a country at war. In the words of director Ángel Tirado:
'Caparrós, without even being an Armenian citizen, managed to transmit what he felt with his heart, infecting everyone with his tenacity and energy'. With a great vital force, based on balance and emotional intelligence, Joaquín Caparrós established himself as a true leader, on and off the pitch. 'We have felt, we have cried… For me personally, the Armenians have given me a lesson in life', recalled Caparrós, an idol for an entire generation of footballers and sports lovers.
