Paco Sepúlveda returns to the Malaga Festival with 'Historias', eleven stories that show the everyday interconnectedness
The film was presented in the Official Section Out of Competition with an choral cast and the last performance of Juan Diego
MÁLAGA. 07/03/24. With eleven interconnected stories, 'Historias' deals with the universal nature of human experiences, proving that, beyond our differences, we all share fundamental emotions such as love, fear, happiness and hope. Directed by Paco Sepúlveda, the film explores the foundations of human existence.
As the filmmaker from Cádiz said in the discussion after the official screening, it is a choral film starring a top-class cast headed by Fernando Tejero, Maggie Civantos, Aura Garrido, Luisa Gavasa, Emilio Gutiérrez-Caba and Emilio Gutiérrez-Caba, Emilio Gutiérrez-Caba, Manuel Morón, Eduardo Blanco, Diego Domínguez, Albert Baró, Helena Kaittani, Edu Rejón, Malena Narvay, Nahuel Picone, Cocó Jiménez, Manuel Baldé, Julia Miró, Amaia Sancristobal, Beatriz Torres and Juan Diego.
'Historias' presents eleven stories that reflect the fact that we are all more alike than we think. No matter where we come from, who we are or where we were born, we all feel love, fear, happiness, hope... This is the premise of the film's plot, which reflects the interconnectedness of our daily lives.
The project, designed on the basis of the director's reflection on his parents' story and his own life trajectory, reveals the need for expression and the exploration of the fears that drive us to live meaningful experiences. Sepúlveda approaches attachment from different perspectives, and invites the audience on a trip in which the film grows in age along with its characters.
As the director himself said after the official screening of the film, 'the choice of cast was inevitable'. For him, having actors such as Maggie Civantos, Fernando Tejero and Luisa Gavasa was a gift, highlighting the unique vibe they brought to the film. Civantos and Tejero praised Sepúlveda's sensitivity and talent for understanding actors, while Gavasa expressed her respect and admiration for the director, having already shared their acting careers in a short film shot eight years ago.
From Sepúlveda's perspective, the connection and ease with which the production developed is due to the sensitivity that the actors brought to the project. The film is presented as a thought-provoking mirror, 'which begins with birth and ends with death, tracing a journey through life and confronting the fears we all share'. A reminder of the desperate need to understand each other and to explore the common essence that connects us as human beings.
