Festival de Málaga launches a new call for the open program of MaF 2025, which incorporates Sound Art as new artistic category
Málaga de Festival will fill the city with cultural activities from the 20th of February to the 13th of March to open the door to the 28th edition of the film contest
The 28th Festival de Málaga, which will take place from the 14th to the 23rd of March 2025, will be preceded by the new edition of MaF - Málaga de Festival from the 20th of February to the 13th of March, a program that seeks to celebrate culture with film as its main goal. MaF - Málaga de Festival is organised by
Málaga City Council through the city company
Málaga Procultura (organiser of
Festival de Málaga).
MaF - Málaga de Festival is built of two areas: the
open program, which is made from the received proposals of the call, as long as they meet the requirements of the selection; and the
permanent program, created by the organisation according to the discursive axes proposed for each edition and in accordance with the public and private entities of the city.
From the 4th to the 29th of November, the
call for the proposals will be launched for the open program, aiming to stimulate the artistic fabric of Málaga and raise awareness of the professionals of the cultural sector. Moreover, as done since the edition of 2021, Málaga de Festival is one of the main elements of this open program to foster collaborations with national creators to generate links that go beyond the city itself. The call’s conditions can be checked on the Festival de Málaga website, on the tab ‘participation’s terms’.
The received projects will be analysed by a selection board and, if accepted, they will take part of the open program of MaF 2025. These initiatives will have the remarkable diffusion and promotion capacity of the Festival de Málaga, as well as, in specific cases, economic, logistic and/or technical support for its realisation.
The proposals must offer new avenues for dialogue with the cultural and artistic action that allow to find new meanings regarding the audiovisual thanks to the alliance with the disciplines that shape MaF 2025 (Sound art, visual art, science, film, exhibitions, thought and tech). Thus, the 2025’s edition of the extended program of the Festival de Málaga, as a response to the changing world of the cultural and creative companies,
it incorporates ‘Sound Art’ to its disciplines aiming to think about the areas proposed through this language.
The proposals received of the launched call must be directly related to the conceptual subjects of MaF 2025:
1. ‘25 of the 21’: in 2025, the 21st century will turn 25 years old and the Festival de Málaga wants to invite us to reflect on the century in which we actually live and participate. What 21st century are we referring to when we talk about the 21sr century?:
· The fear century: one of the characteristics of our time is to use fear as a tool to control societies. The attacks on the twin towers (2001) and the attacks on Atocha (2004), plus different terrorist acts around the planet, created a world order based on the control and supervision of the population.
· The century of social networks: in 2004, Facebook was created, the social network that came to change the way we relate to each other and whose drift led it to intervene ideologically in the geopolitical course of the world with the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a data mining company that favoured Donald Trump's campaign and the Brexit process in the United Kingdom.
· The century of economic vulnerability: one of the pillars of the welfare state is the social protection of citizens. Any welfare state must seek to reduce poverty, inequality, discrimination and unemployment. The current economic model in which we participate does not guarantee that a person with a job can have a decent life.
· The century of Spanish feminism: feminism proposes other ways of existing in the world, far from the hegemonic schemes. In 2018, feminist women and men crowded the streets of the main cities of our country thanks to demonstrations called by Spanish feminism on the occasion of 8M, demonstrations that even made the front pages of the main international media.
· The century in which you don't know whether you are talking to a human or a ChatBot: in 2022, ChatGPT lands in our daily lives to stay. Since then, language, the logic of attention and the management of our emotions and affections have been modified by these elements that are part of our current model of coexistence.
· The century in which a virus reminded us of the importance of the human: in 2020, our lives stopped. Life stopped and, for months, we lived locked in our homes, away from those who needed us most. The vulnerability of humanity was exposed along with the vulnerability of a system we thought was solid. Since then, everything has been precipitated, with human beings being displaced from the very course of life.
2. Paul Auster: the man with the cinematographic gaze: last April, one of the fundamental writers for understanding the history of world literature passed away: Paul Auster. Book after book, Auster perfected an infallible structure that allowed him to dialogue with the world thanks to keys present in all his literature: failed paternal-filial relationships; the implacable presence of chance in our lives, destiny as an inescapable element and the exercise of identity in the experience of life.
