'Gloria Fuertes', the unpublished portrait of a poet ahead of her time, to be presented at the Festival de Málaga
Francisco Rodríguez Fernández explores the life and legacy of the artist, beyond her popular facet, in a revealing documentary.
The Festival de Málaga hosted the screening of 'Gloria Fuertes', a documentary directed by Francisco Rodríguez Fernández and part of the Documentary Special Sessions section on Friday 14 at the Andalusia Tourism and Sports Hall.
The film delves into the career of one of the most beloved poets in Spanish literature. Through unpublished testimonies and archive material, the film reveals unknown aspects of her life and work.
Although her television popularity in the 1970s and 1980s made her an endearing character for children, this documentary reveals how her public image came to overshadow her more committed and transgressive side. Through the testimonies of writers, researchers and people close to the author, as well as unpublished documents, the film reconstructs the true legacy of Gloria Fuertes, putting her where she deserves in Spanish literature.
Francisco Rodríguez Fernández, the author of the film, began his career in the world of cinema working in the direction and production of American films shot in Spain, collaborating with filmmakers such as Samuel Fuller and Richard Lester. As a director, he has participated in international festivals such as Berlin and San Sebastian with films like 'La casa grande' (1975) and 'Jaque a la dama' (1978).
Since 2007, he has specialised in making historical and cultural documentaries, many of which have been broadcast on TVE. His filmography stands out for his work in the recovery and dissemination of key figures in the literary, artistic and cinematographic fields.
The screening was attended by the director of the documentary Francisco Rodríguez Fernández, the executive producer Lourdes Sánchez Serrano, the executive producer of TVE, Ana Peláez, the poet interviewed in the documentary, expert in postism and poetry of Gloria Fuertes, Amador Palacios and the expert on Gloria Fuertes Carmen María Jiménez Uceda.
The director, Francisco Rodríguez Fernández, shared that his aim with this documentary was "to highlight Gloria's work for adults and to put the poet in the place she deserves." For her part, the film's executive producer Lourdes Sánchez Serrano said it was something that poetry lovers "owed her": "She can't just be linked to children's literature, she was much more."
Finally, the executive producer of Televisión Española, Ana Peláez, expressed her excitement, as this is the "first documentary produced by TVE to premiere this year at the Festival de Málaga." And she highlighted TVE's interest in this genre: "quality cinema that allows us to remember characters from history."
The poet interviewed in the documentary, Amador Palacios, an expert on postism and the poetry of Gloria Fuertes, has maintained that he has always known Gloria as "just another poet" and not for her "character", but that this documentary serves to support the role of her figure as an author.
The expert on Gloria Fuertes, Carmen María Jiménez Uceda, described the documentary as "a work of goldsmithing", which allows the artist to be rescued so that she does not remain in oblivion.
After its première at the Festival de Málaga, "Gloria Fuertes" will be screened in several Spanish cities and distributed by Sateco Documentalia.
