The Dominican film 'Olivia y las nubes' arrives in the Zonazine section of the Festival de Málaga
The feature film is a hybrid of animation and live action that took Tomás Pichardo, its director, 10 years to complete

'Olivia y los nubes' premiered on the sixth day of the 28th Festival de Málaga in the Zonazine section. The film, a hybrid of animation and live action, was directed by Dominican Tomás Pichardo, and stars Olga Valdez, Elsa Núñez and Héctor Aníbal.

The story explores the complexities of love through the Rashōmōn effect. Olivia hides the ghost of a past relationship under her bed. She gives it flowers in exchange for clouds that she hangs on her ceiling. Barbara, rejected by Mauricio, escapes from reality through fantastic worlds and stories. Mauricio, regretting losing Bárbara, is swallowed up by the earth. Ramón, obsessed with Olivia, cultivates and see a strange plant grow that looks like her. With surrealistic elements, 'Olivia y los nubes' shows us the power of memories and love.

A press conference was held after the screening of the film in Hall 3 of the Albéniz cinema, attended by its director, Tomás Pichardo, the producer, Fernando Santos; and the actor Héctor Aníbal.

Pichardo revealed at the presentation the arduous process involved in bringing the film to fruition: "It took 10 years from gestation to the final result. I came from making short films, but some of them were never completed. At a certain point, these ideas began to connect, not in narrative terms, but in the feelings they expressed." He also wanted to point out that the animation industry in the Dominican Republic was almost non-existent at the time the project began, so he had to teach his own team: "The idea was always to make the film with a local team, so I taught animation classes to train the people who then became part of the project."

For his part, the producer, Fernando Santos, told how the project came about with Tomás: "I met Tomás eight years ago because I was a fan of his work and, although my experience as a producer came from live-action films, his proposal captivated me. I expressed my interest in making a film with him and he immediately gave me the script for 'Olivia y los nubes'."

The dubbing actor Héctor Aníbal, wanted to share his experience in the making of the film: "At first I was intimidated because Tomás already had the film made, but the process went very smoothly because he was very clear about what he wanted. We also rehearsed as if it were a play, which made everything feel natural in the recording studio."

Regarding the film's references, the director highlighted the films of Ingmar Bergman, specifically the series 'Scenes from a Marriage'; the novels of Japanese author Haruki Murakami, Japanese animation director Massaami Yuasa, and the music of Philip Glass and Los Panchos.

Tomás Pichardo Espaillat is an animator and filmmaker from Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). In 2013, he received a scholarship to Italy and earned his BFA in animation at Parsons in 2010. He graduated in Fine Arts and Illustration in Altos de Chavón in 2008 and from the Pictoplasma Academy in Berlin in 2016. His work has been screened at festivals such as Annecy, La Triennale di Milano, MAC and the Festival de Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano, among others. He has won awards such as the Young Image Prize in 2017 and the Biennial Salon in 2019. His work has been presented in the retrospective at the Lago Film Fest (Italy).
