Guillermo Francella, one of the most emblematic actors of Spanish-speaking cinema, received the Retrospectiva Award on Friday 21 March in recognition of his extensive career on the big screen, television and theatre. This award, which the Festival de Málaga grants in collaboration with the Malaga Hoy newspaper, highlights the career of Francella, who has won over both critics and audiences over the years with his versatility and interpretative depth.
The Festival also hosted the out-of-competition première of 'Playa de lobos', a film directed by Javier Veiga in which Francella shares the lead role with Spanish actor Dani Rovira. All of them have accompanied Francella on the stage of the Cervantes Theatre together with the producers Gerardo Herrero and Mariela Besuievsky, and the Argentinian actor Oscar Martínez.
In the meeting beforehand with the director of the Festival de Málaga, Juan Antonio Vigar, the honouree highlighted that 'Playa de lobos' marks a turning point in his career, as he plays a character full of nuances and contrasts. "I really liked that there was a natural freshness in the conversation, in the relationship, something that generates a lot of humour, but with a darkness that emerges as the story progresses," explained the actor, who was enthusiastic about the film and looking forward to seeing it with the audience.
With a career spanning more than three decades, Francella has starred in iconic films such as 'El secreto de sus ojos' (2009), 'The Clan' (2015) and 'Mi obra maestra' (2018), in which he has played complex and deeply human characters. "I like the script to move me. Having a good script in my hands is what drives me to say yes," said the actor about how he chooses his projects.
In addition, in his chat with Vigar, the actor reflected on the evolution of his career and his transition to working on platforms, with projects such as the series 'El encargado' for Disney+. "The universe of platforms is here to stay, but I don't want people to lose that habit of going to the cinema, that unique moment on the big screen," said Francella, while stressing the importance of keeping both forms of audiovisual consumption alive.
On his beginnings, Francella recalled how his passion for acting started at an early age: "My dream from a very young age was to make a living from this vocation. My parents always supported me on that path and, although it took me a long time to find my continuity, in the end, I felt lucky to be able to dedicate myself to what I love," he said.
With a career spanning multiple genres and a wide variety of characters, Guillermo Francella is satisfied with the road he has travelled. "I've had such an antagonistic and heterogeneous arc in the interpretations I've done that I don't feel I have anything left to do. I'm full, but maybe one day I'd like to explore the classics, like Shakespeare," the actor concluded.
