Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez bring the legend of the band Los Planetas to the big screen with 'Segundo premio'
The directors Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodrguez presented 'Segundo Premio', which competes in the Official Section. It is a recreation of the creation process of the third album by the music band Los Planetas, titled “Una semana en el motor de un autobús”, which was released in 1998. Both directors clarified at a press conference that it is not a documentary or a biography about the band, but rather a fictional feature film about its legend.
Under the sentence'this is not a film about Los Planetas', the script tells the crucial moment that a group from Granada is going through at the end of the 90s, marked by breakups (the bassist leaves the group) and the guitarist is involved in a spiral of self-destruction. However, one of the most successful albums in Spanish indie music will be born from this process.
Lacuesta has explained that he told the members of Los Planetas that it made no sense to make an official film of the group being so unofficial. He was always clear that he would make a film with the same freedom that he has characterised in the creation of his albums, 'a very free film that flows freely' and they accepted it with great affection.
For the creation of the feature film, the directors have explained that they kept constant contact with the leader of the band, Jota, who confessed to them that he imagined a different film. In fact, although each of them dreamed of a different film, 'the only way was to make it the way we dreamed of it.' In short, it is a film about a band that works together to make their dream come true.
'We have chosen the necessary freedom to be able to play with different types of narrative. The story is told through four voices to narrate four different realities that intertwine’.
Its screenwriter, Fernando Navarro, highlighted that the script keeps a duality between fiction and reality. This duality is also visualised through the recreation of Granada in the 90s and the recording process of the album, which recreates a few decisive months for the band, mixing fantasy with reality.
The directors looked for actors to cast who could play and sing and who spoke the Andalusian language of eastern Andalusia. Cristalino, Mafo, Chesco Ruiz, Caraballo and María Navarro are responsible for playing the main characters of the film.
