Julia Juániz explores the art of editing with a masterclass in the ‘Affirming Women's Rights’ section
The auditorium of the Museo Carmen Thyssen hosted a masterclass by the experienced film editor, who reviewed the history of film editing up to the present day
On Tuesday, the auditorium of the Museo Carmen Thyssen hosted a masterclass with Julia Juániz as part of the Affirming Women's Rights section. The Montaje de sueños y soñadores (Editing Dreams and Dreamers) session brought together a large number of people, most of them young film students, who were taken on a journey from the beginnings of film editing to the present day by one of the most important film editors on the national scene.
A masterclass to keep the gender perspective in mind in an industry where there's still a gap between men and women. Speaking of figures, according to the 2022 report prepared by the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media (CIMA), women editors represent only 36 per cent of the total, a percentage that has only increased by one per cent in recent years, as was pointed out during the talk.
Julia Juániz is a renowned film and documentary editor, working with great names in the film industry including Carlos Saura, Víctor Erice, Ramon Barea, Chus Gutiérrez and Rafael Gordon, among others, since she began her professional career in 1990. At the same time, she’s also a director and video artist, and also has a significant career in photography, among other facets, which have led her to obtain different a variety of different awards, such as the Academia del Cine Ricardo Franco Award at the 24th Malaga Festival, the Simone de Beauvoir Award 2021, and the Zinemakumeak Gara! 2017.
In addition, he's currently a member of the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the European Film Academy, and the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
'In the history of cinema, since its origins, women have hardly appeared; only when they've been needed', claimed the renowned filmmaker in a masterclass in which she traced the historical evolution of editing from its beginnings, a subject that served to highlight the current differences between fiction and documentary editing, as well as to talk about the different styles of editing.
