The memory of the Cádiz poet Carlos Edmundo de Ory shines in the Documentary section of the Festival de Málaga
The life of Carlos Edmundo de Ory, an iconoclast author who revolutionised the world of poetry with his rebelliousness, serves as inspiration for the documentary Carlos Edmundo de Ory, el juego y la palabra, directed by José Luis Hernández Arango. Presented this Tuesday in the Tourism and Sports Room, the film celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the poet, one of the fundamental writers of the 20th century.
For many a ‘poète maudit’, ‘iconoclast’, or ‘heretic’, Carlos Edmundo de Ory had an unmistakable style. Always wearing his hat and with long hair, Ory was considered 'a luminous and sensitive person'. This is how he was described by the people who knew him best, his friends (poets, writers, journalists), his biographer, and especially his widow Laura Lacheroy, who also takes part in the documentary.
'The documentary is about a very unique poet, a very curious character that I hadn’t come across. One day, while scrolling through social media, I came across a publication by the Carlos Edmundo de Ory Foundation. I started to investigate, and discovered a great story behind it', revealed José Luis Hernández Arango at the film’s presentation.
Featuring interviews with different witnesses to the life and prolific work of this writer, poet, narrator, essayist and translator from Cadiz, the film is the result of extensive research. 'When I think of Ory, I think of his games as something sacred, imagination, silence', recalled the writer Carmen Camacho in her testimony captured in the documentary.
Hijo Predilecto (honorary favourite son) of Andalusia, founder of ‘postism’ (an artistic and literary movement that emerged in Spain in the mid-20th century and prolonged some aspects of the avant-garde), and famous for aphorisms full of wit that he christened ‘aeroliths’, Carlos Edmundo de Ory decided for personal reasons to go into exile in France, where he died at the age of 87 in the town of Thézy-Glimond.
