Family ties are at the centre of the plot of 'Como el mar’, the proposal by Nicolás Gil Lavedra
The third feature film by the Argentine director, recognised with an award at the Ibero-American Film Festival in Miami, celebrates its international premiere at the Malaga Festival.
The bond between two sisters who have just lost their mother, strengthening their relationship, is the focus of the plot of 'Como el mar', the latest Ibero-American proposal from the Malaga Festival that has been presented in the Official Section out of competition. Azul (Zoe Hochbaum) and Paula (Sofía Gala Castiglione) decide to cremate the body of their deceased mother, but the discovery of a family secret makes them embark on a journey of redemption and forgiveness when they discover that the sisters are actually mother and daughter. Azul goes into shock and begins the journey to search for her father, and recover the loss of her identity, accompanied by the one she until now believed was her sister.
The road film directed by Nicolás Gil Lavedra and scripted by Gustavo Gersberg and the film's protagonist, Zoe Hochbaum, also features the participation of the Spanish Carmen Maura in the role of Aunt Mecha, who never agreed to hide the secret. The mother-daughter filial bond evolves into a deep story of learning and strengthening of relationships with forgiveness as the forefront of the narrative, set in the impressive landscapes of Cabo Polonio, in Uruguay.
Regarding the special collaboration of Carmen Maura, the actress and screenwriter noted in the discussion after the press and public screening that it was a true act of faith for the Spanish actress and that she trusted in her project from the first reading of the script. Gil Lavedra has expressed the communion that existed between the three actresses from the beginning, and how much Maura gave to the project throughout the production.
Regarding the making of the project, Hochbaum has stated that the story, based on real events, begins as a personal experience of a friend and that it was thought of from the beginning as a theatrical project. Seven years after proposing the idea to Gersberg, the initial idea was transformed into a film script.
In the director's words, the film talks about human relationships and the possibility of forgiving a big lie. The film's narrative develops, assisted by visual aesthetics, with a typology of shots that varies depending on the liberation of its protagonists and the maturation of the bond between the two. Hochbaum has invited reflection on whether lying is justifiable as an act of love or rather it is an act of cowardice. Hochbaum closed the meeting by pointing out how much she learned from accepting what the lie meant for her, after the confession of such a relevant deception, experienced in the first person by someone so close to her.
'Como el mar', which had its world premiere in Miami, where it won the top award at the VI edition of the American Film Festival, will have its premiere in Argentina on the 28th of March and is pending its passage through commercial cinemas in Spain.
