The
Cine Albéniz is once again hosting The Golden Age, the classic film festival organised by
Málaga City Council through
Málaga Procultura, with the collaboration of
"la Caixa" Foundation, Classic Films and Europa Cinemas, which will be screening seven thematic cycles of 20 feature films in 35 mm, DCP and VOSE from the 6th to the 13th of September. It will also include an introductory workshop on film language for people over 55; a concert by the rock band Leone at the Teatro Echegaray and a meeting whose stars will be announced in the near future.
The purpose of this cycle is to highlight classic film in original format, following on from the work carried out throughout the rest of the year by the Cine Albéniz Film Library, which will host all the screenings, with great public support. This year The Golden Age commemorates the centenaries of Lauren Bacall, Marcello Mastroiani, Lee Marvin, Marlon Brando, Stanley Donen and Henry Mancini. It also pays tribute to the French director and leading figure of modern European cinema, Agnès Varda, and approaches one of the key figures of recent cinema: Yorgos Lanthimos. There will also be a special screening of Sergio Leone's masterpiece,
Érase una vez en América.
Thus, the cycle dedicated to the centenary of director
Stanley Donen and composer
Henry Mancini will include screenings of
Charada (1963) and
Dos en la carretera (1967). The
Yorgos Lanthimos cycle will recall three films from the Greek director's early days:
Kinetta (2005),
Canino (2009) and
Alps (2011). The universe of French director
Agnès Varda will be explored with
La felicidad (1965) and
Las criaturas (1966). The immeasurable
Lauren Bacall will appear in
Mi desconfiada esposa (Vincente Minnelli, 1959),
Escrito sobre el viento (Douglas Sirk, 1960) and
Tener y no tener (Howard Hawks, 1944). The great
Marcello Mastroianni will star in
Matrimonio a la italiana (Vittorio de Sica, 1974) and
Una jornada particular (Ettore Scola, 1977).
Lee Marvin's centenary will be the opportunity to watch
Doce del patíbulo (Robert Aldrich, 1967),
A quemarropa (John Boorman, 1968) and
Los sobornados (Fritz Lang, 1953). The celebration of
Marlon Brando's centenary will be the occasion to watch
La ley del silencio (Elia Kazan, 1954),
Un tranvía llamado deseo (Elia Kazan, 1951) and
Salvaje (László Benedek, 1953). The show will end with the screening of
Sergio Leone's
Érase una vez en América (1984).
As for side events, there will be a new
Introduction to the Language of Film Workshop for people over 55 years old, which will take place on the 11th and 12th of September, during the morning hours, in collaboration with the "la Caixa" Foundation. It will analyse Howard Hawks' film
Tener y no tener. Registration, until the 3rd of September, must be made by sending an e-mail to promocion@malagaprocultura.com in which those interested should provide their full name, age, contact phone number and preferred day for the event.
The
Teatro Echegaray will host on
Friday the 13th (8 pm)
Leone in concert. Songs of love and hate. Leone, by Sergio Leone, is a rock band that makes music with cinematographic touches, with one foot in Spanish song (
copla, bolero, Mediterranean song) and the other in American music (surf, rock, country). Gathered in Madrid in 2014, its members come from different parts of the country. Two of its members are from Almeria, and the nod to the Italian filmmaker is also a nod to the desert and the landscapes of his native Almeria. The connection with the Italian director's films can be glimpsed in the western airs of their songs and in the stories they tell, which include characters reminiscent of
Érase una vez en América. Leone also sounds like tarantella, Mediterranean boogie, light music, sounds that also bring us closer to Morricone. Their songs are cinematographic experiences that sometimes remind us of the dreaminess of Lawrence of Arabia and sometimes of the movement of American road movies, but always of classic cinema.
Tickets for The Golden Age are on sale from today at 6 p.m. at the Cine Albéniz and Teatro Cervantes ticket offices and on the Unientradas website at a unit price of €6 (€5 for Club Albéniz members) for the screenings and €15 for the concert.
